– They are having the upper-hand in court at the moment

Victory in court may be in sight for Otodo Gbame residents as a high court judge, Justice S.A Onigbanjo of the Lagos state high court accused the Lagos state government of contempt of court.

The judge further described the government’s action as reprehensible, Yzenithbloga reports.

The Lagos state government partially demolished structures in the community on Friday, March 17 in violation of a court injunction.

The residents of Otodo-Gbame have been sleeping in their boats ever since their forceful ejection

Subsequently, the government sent armed security agencies to harrass, intimidate and forcefully eject residents of the water-front community.

Many of the residents have been injured in the clash with security agencies, but the people are not deterred.

They have also been trooping to the court to witness the hearing of the case.

UPDATE:

Justice Onigbangbo has struck out contempt proceedings against the Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, stating that “the court lacks the jurisdiction to charge the governor of the state because of the immunity he enjoys.”

The judge further said that “if the governor had truly ordered the forceful eviction and demolition of the second applicant, he undermined the principles of the rule of law and the same process which put him in office in the first place.”
