For years, Nigerians have suffered poor power supply. Despite promises by different governments, the country cannot boast of a steady power supply.
A new power poll by NOIPolls for the first quarter of 2017 showed that there was a decline in the state of power supply to Nigerian households to 30 percent in Q1, 2017 from the 37 percent obtained in Q4, 2016.
Growing up, NEPA (National Electric Power Authority) was the only main provider of electricity. It was owned and operated by the government as a public organization until it was privatized and renamed Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).
Despite the name change, many Nigerians still easily refer to the power company as NEPA.
Blackouts are daily occurrences in Nigeria. Sometimes, it lasts for hours and other times it lasts for days. Once power is interrupted, people say “NEPA has taken light” and it is restored, they say “Up NEPA”.
