Nigeria’s minister of state for petroleum, Dr Ibeh Kachikwu is confident of President Muhammadu Buhari’s popularity among Nigerians.

Kachikwu said President Buhari will probably win the 2019 presidential election while responding to a question on Quest Means Business, a business show on CNN.

Kachikwu was responding to the anchor’s question which centered on the fact the Nigerian politicians are already in election mode with 2019 around the corner.

Dr Kachikwu is confident that his boss will win the 2019 polls

“Those of us in government are focused on getting work done; the president is probably going to win the election anyway,” he said confidently.

Speaking on the diversification of Nigeria’s economy, the minister said the effort of the government in this regard was realistic, and that results would be evident in the next five or seven years.

“It is realistic. Five or seven years. Petroleum led us into this problem; it has to lead us out,” he said.

Asked how far the current reforms in the petroleum sector are at the moment, Kachikwu said, “about 50 percent”.

Kachikwu’s comment comes the same day his colleague, the minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi said President Buhari is fit enough to stand for reelection.

President Buhari has not been seen in public for almost two weeks

Amaechi stated this during an interview on a television programme aired on Channels TV, adding that the president’s sickness is not enough to stop him from contesting elections in 2019.

President Buhari has not been seen in public for almost two weeks. He has also been absent from the last couple of Federal Executive Council meetings held at the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, Abuja.
