Tensions as Biafran group give police IG new order, list items that must be returned

– MASSOB claims to be a non-violent organisation and wonders why security agencies have constantly harassed and arrested its members

– Apart from asking the police IG to order the return of seized property, the group asked the police to obey court rulings in favour of the agitators

Two Biafra agitating groups, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) Biafra Independent Movement (BIM), have asked the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, to order the Ebonyi state command to return all its properties that were unlawfully taken away during a raid on the premises of the groups in 2013.

Vanguard reports that the demand was made on behalf of the group by one of their leaders in Ebonyi state, Mr Nwifuru John.

John gave the list of the items with the police to include: MASSOB ID cards, six pairs of MASSOB boots, uniforms, 48 plastic chairs and N250,000.

He accused the police of regular intimidation, harassment and unlawful arrest and detention of members of MASSOB in the state.

“As freedom fighters, no amount of persecution and intimidation would deter the group from pursuing its core objective of actualizing the sovereign state of Biafra in the near future,” he reportedly warned.

The Biafran leader further accused the police of disobeying court verdicts which had ordered the police to pay a compensation of N2 million and N5 million respectively as damages against the group.

He described the group as a non-violent organization wondering why the police was in the habit of disobeying court orders concerning it.

The police public relations officer in Ebonyi, DSP Jude Madu, denied knowledge of such police seizure of MASSOB properties.
