President Buhari renominates 82-year-old retired Justice as ambassadorial nominee

– Retired Justice Sylvanus Nsofor, has been renominated by President Muhammadu Buhari as a non-career ambassador

– The Senate had rejected the 82-year-old from Imo state and 59-year-old Jacob Daodu from Ondo state based on the recommendation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs

– The Senate president, Senator Bukola Saraki, read a letter from President Buhari in which he replaced the Ondo nominee with Joseph Olusola Iji

Retired Justice Sylvanus Nsofor, 82, whose nomination as non-career ambassador was rejected by the Senate has been renominated by President Muhammadu Buhari, The Punch reports.

On March 23, the upper chamber had dropped two of the 47 ambassadorial nominees sent to it by the president for confirmation.

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that the Senate rejected Nsofor from Imo State and 59-year-old Jacob Daodu from Ondo state based on the recommendation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

However the president of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, read a letter from President Buhari at the plenary on Wednesday, in which he renominated Nsofor and replaced the Ondo nominee with Joseph Olusola Iji.

Suleiman Zana Hassan from Gombe state who was nominated as minister after his ambassadorial nomination had been confirmed by the Senate was replaced with Commodore Yusuf Jonga Hinna (Retd.).

Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, the chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, while presenting the report, stated that Nsofor was not rejected due to his age but based on his performance when he was screened.

ZENITHBLOG.com previously reported that Nsofor, 82, during his screening, refused to recite the national anthem and questioned the senators’ reason for asking him for the recital.

Nsofor pushed back a question on his ability to perform the job of an envoy at his age. He said the Senate should ask Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe how he was leading his country despite his very advanced age.

In related development, President Buhari, in another letter to the Senate, sought confirmation for the appointment of five members for the board of Central Bank of Nigeria “in accordance with Sections 6(1)(d) and 10(1) and (2) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act 2007.”

The nominees are Prof. Ummu Ahmed Jalingo (North-East), Prof. Justitia Odinakachukwu Nnabuko (South-East), Prof. Mike Obadan (South-South), Dr. Abdu Abubakar (North-West) and Adeola Adetunji (South-West).
