President Muhammadu Buhari appointed new heads of agencies and parastatals last weekend. this development has allegedly stirred outrage in the nation’s culture and tourism sector.

The Guardian reports that stakeholders feel that Buhari failed to follow due process in announcing the appointment of the five new chief executives.

The stakeholders say the process was not proper in that the appointment was made by the presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, instead of the office of the Culture Minister or Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

A statement by Adesina named one-album singer, Tar Ukoh, as Artistic Director of the National Theatre and National Troupe of Nigeria while the sacked former Director General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Otunba Segun Runsewe, emerged chief executive of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC).

gathered that others whose appointments were announced are: Chidia Madueke as General Manager of the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC); Adedayo Thomas, Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) and erstwhile Commissioner for Tourism in Lagos State, Folorunso Coker, as NTDC DG.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture has said the culture and tourism sector would soon become a credible alternative to crude oil.

Mohammed spoke at the Quarterly Public Lecture entitled “ Promoting Culture, Developing the Economy“ organised by National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) in Abuja.

“I believe the sector will become a credible alternative to crude oil in no distant time. Many countries of the world are harnessing the huge potentials in their culture and tourism.

“We cannot afford to lag behind as cultural industries are acknowledged as the fastest growing in countries all over the world.

“Nigeria’s journey towards economic growth and development would have truly begun, if all stakeholders accord the priority attention it deserves.

“It is pertinent to state here that the task of developing our economy is the responsibility of all Nigerians,’’ Mohammed said.
