Magu relocates to Lagos as EFCC searches apartment of former Anambra governor in Osborne Towers Ikoyi

– A former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi, has confirmed that the EFCC searched his apartment in Osborne Towers, Ikoyi

– Obi’s media aide, Mr Val Obienyem, states that the apartment was rented by Obi’s wife

– Obienyem cautions against linking Obi to the cash haul, noting that the entire occupants of the building were also searched

The acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has shifted his base to Lagos to oversee the probe on how the $43.4million found its way to Apartment 7B, in Osborne Towers, Ikoyi.

A former governor of Anambra state, Mr Peter Obi, has confirmed on Tuesday, April 18, that his apartment in Osborne Towers, was one of the many searched by the anti-graft agency, following the discovery of the of the N13.3 billion ($43.4million) in the building, This Day reports.

Obi’s media aide, Val Obienyem, said the former governor confirmed the search by the EFCC of flat 1 occupied by him in the building.

Peter Obi has confirmed that the EFCC searched his apartment in Osborne Towers, Ikoyi.

Obienyem, who noted that the former governor lives in Onitsha, said that the apartment was rented by Obi’s wife.

The aide added that the apartment is usually used by the former governor anytime he is in Lagos.

Obienyem, who cautioned against linking Obi to the cash haul, noted that the entire occupants of the building were also searched.

“Even though Mr. and Mrs Obi had travelled to the USA and the U.K. for speaking engagements, when we relayed the message of the search to him, he quickly sent the keys to the 4-bedroom apartment to the EFCC via courier.

“He even left instructions that we should allow them to also search his

Onitsha residence should there be need for that. After the thorough searching, nothing was found in the apartment”

“After a thorough search, nothing was found in the apartment,” Obienyem said.

Obienyem added that during the search one of the operatives of the EFCC was overheard doubting if the apartment had anything to do with Obi because it was the simplest in terms of furnishing.

The Osborne Towers where the $43.4million was found on Wednesday, April 12, is home to many VIP tenants.

Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman, Adamu Mua’zu and a former petroleum product marketing company (PPMC) managing director, Mrs Esther Nnamdi-Ogbue also own apartments in the Towers.

With a lease rate of N20million per annum, Osborne Towers has been described as one of the best residential property in Africa.

Meanwhile, the AGF and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) has cleared the air on his involvement in the recovered fund.

Malami said he has not been directed by President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the N15 billion recovered by the EFCC contrary to some media reports insinuating he was instructed by the president to unravel the recovery.

The minister made this known during a phone chat with Daily Trust on Monday, April 18.

According to him, the security agencies involved were directly answerable to the president, adding that nobody can pre-empt Mr President.
