Ile-Ife clash: Traditional ruler, others detained as 15 suspects regain freedom

– Police has released 15 out of the 21 indigenes of Ile-Ife arrested over their alleged involvement in the March 8 clash between the Yoruba and Hausa communities

– The 15 indigenes were released around 4pm to a member of the defense lawyers, Ropo Oyewole

– However, a traditional ruler, Oba Ademola Ademiluyi and five others who were also paraded are still in police custody

The pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has disclosed that 15 out of the 21 indigenes of Ile-Ife arrested over their alleged involvement in the March 8 clash between the Yoruba and Hausa communities in the ancient town have been released unconditionally.

According to Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, the 15 indigenes were released around 4pm to a member of the defense lawyers, Ropo Oyewole, Vanguard reports.

However, Odumakin said that the traditional ruler among them, Oba Ademola Ademiluyi and five others who were also paraded are still in police custody.

He said: “As at 4pm yesterday evening, 15 detained Ile-Ife indigenes were released. They were released to a member of the defense team, Ropo Oyewole. Unfortunately, the Kabiyesi and five others are still in detention.”

Those released include Ayoola Abimbola, Bello Wahab, Peter Omisore, Adefisan Isaac, Adelekan Kehinde, Elufisan Akintoye, Omisanmi Isaac and Adejobe Monday.

Others are Olanrewaju Adebayo, Akanbi Adeyinka, Obimakin Samuel, Alhaji Zakariyu Abdulyakeen, Bamidele Elufisan, Clement Kehinde, Akinyombo Seye.

He said: “We are awaiting the release of the remaining six indigenes and we also demand their unconditional release too.”

Earlier, ZENITHBLOG.com reported that Afenifere called on the police to return the suspects arrested in connection with the crisis in Ile-Ife to Osun state where the incident took place.

The group accused the police of bias in the way it handled the ethnic clash, largely between Hausas and Yorubas in Ile-Ife, Osun state.

According to the group, the police must investigate the crisis with utmost fairness and in line with the ethics of the profession

ZENITHBLOG.com recalls that 39 people were arrested as a result of the Ife clash between the Yoruba and Hausa communities in ancient town but only 21 of them, including a traditional ruler, who were all Yoruba were paraded at Abuja Force Headquarters of the police.
