How police dismantled militants den in Ikorodu (photos)

The Lagos state police command has raided a militant camp located in creeks in the Ishawo community in the Ikorodu area of the Lagos state.

The Tribune reports that the raid which began on Wednesday morning, April 19, led to the destruction of a militant enclave and the arrest of 13 suspected militants.

ZENITHBLOG.com learnt that the state commissioner of police, Fatai Owoseni, and other top hierarchy of the command were on hand to supervise the operation.

ZENITHBLOG.com recalls that militants who kidnapped some persons at the Woodland Estate close to Ishawo Creeks engaged on April 9, engaged security personnel in a gun duel and killed 4 police men and an army captain in the process.

The security officers were killed on Sunday, April 9, while trying to rescue persons abducted by the unidentified gunmen following a distress call that some armed men had entered the wutu-Isawo in Ikorodu through the thick swampy forest surrounding the area.

After the attack, the commissioner of police in Lagos state, Mr Fatai Owoseni, disclosed that the command was working with sister security agencies to arrest the suspected militants that killed security men.

Their offensive on the militants was sequel to a directive from IGP Ibrahim Idris to all police units and commands in Lagos and Ogun to get the culprits dead or alive.

ZENITHBLOG.com learnt that the IGP also dispatched an Intelligence Response Team (IRT) to Lagos to help with the operation.

The Wednesday raid on the creeks was done by a combined team of the state marine police, the special anti-robbery squad (SARS), mobile policemen and the men from the anti-kidnapping squad in coordination with the local vigilante group.

Fatai Owoseni who briefed journalists in Ishawo on the ongoing operations said 13 suspected kidnappers have already been arrested and are currently aiding the team to track down the remaining suspects still on the run, Vanguard reports.

He said: “So far so good following the attack that occurred at Ishawo where we lost four of our policemen and army captain, we have deployed operatives in the water. What you have seen now is for us to appraise what we have been doing for the past one week.

“So, quality arrests have been made and we are talking to them because the arrests that were made we believe that we get some evidential value from them, so they are talking to us, at least that makes us to know who we are looking for so that we won’t be just wild catching.”

Owoseni said the police have gathered necessary information on the perpetrators still on the run, assuring that one by one, they would be arrested and be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Recall that the IGP Intelligence Response Team (IRT) arrested one of the ring leaders behind the killings of the policemen in Ikorodu during a raid on his girlfriend’s house on Sunday, April 16.

The suspect, Endurance Ominisan aka Mighty, however died on Tuesday morning, April 18, at a hospital as a result of the injuries he sustained during a gun fight with the police.

Before his death, he mentioned one America, Stone, Vika and others as his gang members, who participated in the killing of the four policemen and soldier.

He also reportedly confessed to have masterminded the kidnaps of Iba Monarch, Turkish School Girls and many others within the zone.
