Delta residents protest 7 months total darkness as BEDC staff flee offices (photos)

– Some residents of Alegbor community in Uvwie local government area staged a protest in Delta state

– The resident lamented the prolonged lack of electricity supply in their community

– The threatened to to block major roads in the community if their demand is not met

There was tension in Alegbor community in Uvwie local government area of Delta on Wednesday, June 28, following a protest by its residents.

The residents of the community in their scores protested seven months of continued darkness

Chanting songs of solidarity, visited the Effurun GRA Office of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to register their grievances.

The crowd with their various placards accused the company of being partial to the community.

The resident lamented the prolonged lack of electricity supply in their community

Their placards read: “NEPA give us light. NEPA give us prepaid meters, “Funke give us prepaid meter. BEDC stop the fraud”, Stop Ojoro” and “Stop the fraud. No light, No pay”, Over billing must stop. Stop estimation”.

The resident lamented the prolonged lack of electricity supply in their community

The protesters also threatened to block major roads including the Jakpa, Ugbuwangue and many roundabouts around the community if their demands were not met.

One of the protesters Doris Ehimika who spoke on the matter said the community members have faced serious challenges in the hands of the electricity company.

Ehimika said the last time the community had electricity supply was seven months ago.

She said: “We last saw light January. Before now, they gAve us light two days and go off two days only to change it to one day on and one day off from 3pm-6pm. Later, they seized the light and left us in darkness for over seven months.”

“We cannot take this any longer. We are on a peaceful protest and all we are saying is that BEDC should give us light. But if they fail, we will block all the major roads like PTI, Jakpa, Ugbuwangue and roundabout until Government and BEDC hear our cry,” Ehimika said.

Meanwhile, staff of the BEDC were seen vacating to their offices.

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that an official van of the BEDC was seen driving away from the scene as the irritant residents barricaded the gate of the company.

ZENITHBLOG.com had in January reported how some residents of Sapele, an area in Delta state took the street to protest consistent lack of electricity supply.

The resident while protesting carried their generators on their heads to register their annoyance with the electricity company.
