– A former minister of state for education, Professor Jerry Agada is of the view that Nigeria has not gotten it right
– He said successive leaders in the country have failed to initiate and sustain strong policies
– He warned that the country might disintegrate if the present situation persists
A former minister of state for education, Professor Jerry Agada, has attributed the poor state of things in the country to the inability of successive leaders to drive home strong policies that could strengthen the system.
He said, a country where the leaders and elites get richer while the poor gets poorer, will “incrementally derail, decline and disintegrate.”
Professor Agada made the statement at the 2017 Cultural Day of National Association of Idoma Students (NAIS) at the weekend.

The former minister who was the special guest of honour at the event, stated that Nigeria needed credible leaders, with track records of honesty, dedication and selflessness.
His words: “It is pertinent to note that since independence, Nigeria has been swimming in mediocrity and lack of purpose. There is no permanence, no continuity and no priority policy issues.
“We must admit that poverty, ignorance, fear fear and religious fanaticism have led to a situation where the relationship between the leadership and followership is akin to that between a slave and master.
“The leader is seen as a divine appointee and first among equals. This ignorance and religious conception of what the leader is, has given credence to the dictatorial tendencies on the leadership in Nigeria, whether in military or civilian attire.”
Also speaking at the event, the minister of agriculture and rural development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, charged Idoma youths and students to shun cultism and other social vices.
Highlights of the event was the presentation of merit awards to Chief Ogbeh, presidential aide; Dr. Samuel Ankeli, media consultant; Prince Yemi Itodo among others.
Meanwhile, the Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) has called for the presidency to remain in the North ahead of the 2019 general elections.
Rising from its meeting in Yola, Adamawa state on Saturday, June 17, the group comprising the National Executive Committee of NYLF, the state chairmen and the chairmen and secretaries of the 42 affiliated Northern Organizations, were unequivocal in their demand for a northern presidency come 2019.
Addressing the press after the meeting, the chairman of NYLF, Comrade Elliot Afiyo, stated that the North will not allow the presidency move to the South in 2019.
