Questions parents may be asked when applying for a child's passport born in Nigeria

Getting a Nigerian passport is the number one criteria for any citizen that wishes to identify as a citizen of the country both in and out of the country.

The passport is issued by Nigeria immigration service and they have basic things that need to be provided before anyone can be issued a passport.

However, to obtain a passport for a minor (persons under 18 years of age), you as the parent will need to provide the following information:

The parents must provide evidence(s) that shows that they are Nigerians. Where the child is born is of utmost importance too, they will want to know.

Also, the embassy would want to know if both parents consent to it, especially if one of them isn’t available physically. This might actually need a letter of consent for official confirmation.

Overall, here are the requirements as listed by the Nigeria Immigration Service:

1. Completed passport application form attached with one passport-sized photograph of the minor. This is to be endorsed on the reverse side by the consenting parents.

2. Evidence of Nigerian citizenship of parents.

3. Birth certificate (certificate must be issued by the National Population Commission for minors born within Nigeria).

4. Letter of consent from both parents (Court Order to support a parent’s unavailability)

5. Acknowledgement slip and evidence of payment.

In the case where the minor is an adopted child, court order and letter of approval from the State Ministry of Women and Child Development is required.
