Biafra referendum: what decision was made on 21st, July 2017?

Biafra issue

Biafra issue

For decades, the topic of Biafra has been a constant one among Nigerians. The population of Nigeria has been divided on the idea of Biafra for ages. Some say that the concept is hurtful for the Nigerian nation, as it causes dissension and fuels hate. On the other hand, there are people that claim that Nigeria was not even meant to be, that they were forced to become a single nation. Pro-Biafra people no longer have faith in Nigeria, so they want Biafra to be independent.

We will not repeat the entire history of Biafra for a millionth time, as we are sure that everyone who is reading this is aware of it already. However, it will not hurt to mention that Biafra used to be an independent republic that existed between 1967 to 1970. Since then, a lot of people who still consider themselves Biafrans have been trying to revive the republic.

pro-Biafra

Among those people, the most active group that really stands out is Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). For IPOB, Biafra’s independence is of extreme importance. That is why they were doing everything in their power to make Nigerian government officials recognise the need for a referendum.

However, help seemed to come from a different direction. The U.S. President Donald J. Trump allegedly announced the referendum for Biafra meeting to be held in the White House on July 21, 2017. It has been almost a week since then, so let’s take a look at what has been decided.

As we have said before, the meeting was set for July 21. According to DailyPost.ng and a few other news websites, five members of IPOB were to sit down with the U.S. senators and to talk about the Biafra referendum.

Or so it seemed.

All of this information was shared by Candy Stallworth, the seemingly self-proclaimed U.S. Mobilisation Officer of IPOB. On her Facebook page (http://ift.tt/2w3aLpC), she shared a screenshot of the White House website, where the five IPOB representatives were on the guest list. After that, she often reminded her followers that the day they were waiting for was coming.

On July 21, when the meeting was supposed to happen, Candy had a live stream from a random empty hall, claiming that she is having a conversation with the senators. Maybe the conversation happened in her head, because for the duration of the video, not a single person appeared in the shot. There is no guarantee that the video was even shot in the White house.

To make matters worse, she made a second video outside, where she claimed that the new date for the referendum was September 12, 2017. However, she was outside of the Capitol Hill and not in the White house. Therefore, it kind of made her look like a liar. To add fuel to the fire, the screenshot of the White House website also seems fake. There is no such page there, and the White House guest list is being kept secret.

IPOB has since come forward to disapprove of Candy’s actions. In their statement, they said that they are investigating her in terms of gross misconduct and fraud. IPOB also apologised for the fact that they let this situation come to life in the first place. IPOB representatives assured the people that this kind of propaganda will not make them stray from their path.

In addition, a few days ago, an audio surfaced of a phone call between her and an APC agent. According to the audio, Candy was to receive a hefty sum of $100,000 (approximately ₦35,000,000) from the APC for her dismantling of the image of several PDP members.

Candy

Despite the fact that IPOB has cut all ties with Candy and encouraged other people to ignore her, her Facebook page has not caught up yet. It still says that she is a U.S. Mobilisation Officer of IPOB. Her posts have almost ceased since July 21.

However, just as we were writing it, she made another post, where she accuses the members of APC of spying on her and using the old audio from the time when she was involved in the Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign. What is the truth? We may never know. However, it is obvious that Candy can no longer be considered a reliable source on all things connected with Biafra.

In what year will Biafra come to reality?

Biafra

It is fairly obvious Candy’s ‘referendums’ are a fraud, and Candy herself is not likely to have anything to do with IPOB. Her actions have undermined the whole movement for Biafra’s independence. However, it does not mean defeat for Biafra.

In the past few years, IPOB and other pro-Biafra groups have been actively rallying for the recognition of Biafra. Many people want Biafra to be independent, and the government cannot sit on their hands much longer. Sooner or later, they will have to acknowledge Biafra in one way or another, if they want to avoid what happened fifty years ago.

Biafra supporters

No one knows when (or rather if) Biafra will be independent again. Many people still do not believe in it and do not want it to happen. However, even they recognise that the Biafra issue should be addressed to settle things once and for all. Until then, the country will live in continuous tumult. The only thing we have left is to wait for the official announcement from the USA.

Despite all of these events, one thing is certain. If God is willing, Biafra will come to be once again. Biafrans need to have patience and believe in His judgement.
