The federal government has noted that it may take years to find all the Chibok girls kidnapped by Boko Haram.

Nigeria’s defence minister, Mansur Ali, who made the statement on Tuesday, April 18, on the VOA’s Hausa service, said the military is committed to finding the girls and is searching Boko Haram hideouts in the Sambisa forest, Premium Times reports.

According to Mr Ali, a retired brigadier general, the inability to find the girls despite retaking most of the territory initially occupied by Boko Haram is similar to efforts made by the US to find Osama bin Laden after the invasion of Afghanistan.

It took the U.S. up to seven, eight, up to 10 years before they could get to bin Laden,” he said. “We are continuing our campaign in the Sambisa Forest in all its nooks and corners.”

that Boko Haram kidnapped the 276 female students from a government secondary school in the north-eastern town of Chibok, Borno State, on April 14, 2014.

About 195 of the girls are still missing and are believed to be in the custody of insurgents, whose activities have caused the death of about 100,000 people since 2009.

Meanwhile, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), said the Nigerian Air Force conducts daily missions to locate and rescue the Chibok girls still in captivity.

ZENITHBLOG.com reports that Abubakar who spoke to journalists shortly after a special Juma’at prayer to kickstart activities for the 53rd anniversary of the Air Force, said the service is passionate about rescuing the Chibok girls.

The CAS added that it is through intelligence gathering that the service is going to try to locate not only the Chibok girls but many other Nigerians that are in captivity.

President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that his government is currently negotiating with the Boko Haram insurgents for the release of the remaining Chibok girls.
