We can’t celebrate Easter with hunger as we did with Christmas, Ex- militants cry out

Former militant commanders are angry over the persistent delay in the payment of their stipends

– The militants said the federal government has not paid them for four months from December 2016 to March 2017

– They said it is unfair for them to celebrate Easter with hunger as they celebrated Christmas and New year

Former militant commanders have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to pay their stipends saying they cannot celebrate Easter with hunger as they did with the 2016 Christmas celebration.

In a telephone interview with ZENITHBLOG.com, leader of the National Coalition of Niger Delta Ex-Agitators, Israel Eshanekpe Akpodoro, said the amnesty office is yet to pay the repentant militants from December 2016 to March 2017.

Akpodoro, who said the former militants celebrated 2016 Christmas in hunger even as other government officials and civil servants were paid their salaries and others for the Christmas and New Year, former militants spent the end of year in hunger and starvation.

The former militant commander said the delay in the payment of the former warlords was a bad omen for the federal government, an administration he had vehemently supported in the face of opposition from some quarters of the federation.

class="align-left">According to him: “We cannot do Christmas in hunger and also do Easter in hunger. The former militants have wives and children, they depend entirely on the N65,000 stipend for their living.

“So, it is unfair for the government to withhold the money and keep them in hunger. They are owing us four months, beginning from December 2016 to March 2017.

“All my members from different places are disturbing me, wanting to know what the federal government is doing over their payment.

“They said I should talk to the government to pay them before Easter day. I’m using this opportunity to urge the president to pay us our stipends so that we can celebrate Easter with our people in happiness

“We don’t want the good plan of government to be rubbished by the delay of the payment of our stipends. The federal government should pay us before the end of work on Thursday.

“The boys don’t have another source of income. This is what they depend on to live. We want to celebrate Easter with happiness.”
