We are in negotiation with Boko Haram for the release of the remaining Chibok girls – Buhari

-The Chibok girls were abducted from their school in Borno state in the heat of the Boko Haram insurgency in 2014

President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that his government is currently negotiating with the Boko Haram insurgents for the release of the remaining Chibok girls.

ZENITHBLOG.com reports that the girls were kidnapped from their school in 2014 while they were preparing for an examination.

Since then, some of the girls have been rescued while the government has been able to negotiate the release of some other girls.

As Nigeria marked the third year of the abduction of the girls by the insurgents, Buhari said he shared the pains the parents have had to go through since the children’s disappearance.

He also said that his government was negotiating with the insurgents for the release of the children adding that he is ready to bend backwards to ensure that the children return safely to their parents.

The president said: “We will never ever give up, whether on rescuing all captives, or on completely vanquishing Boko Haram. That remains our promise to you.”

The president added: “Regarding our Chibok girls, we must not lose hope. I trust God that soon, our collective efforts will be rewarded with their safe return. Let me use this opportunity to remind all that last December our troops overran Boko Haram’s headquarters in the Sambisa Forest.

“For this we have our gallant Intelligence and security forces to thank. We’re also grateful to all

International partners who’ve supported us. Today, Boko Haram has been degraded and is no longer in a position to mount serious attacks, other than sporadic suic*de attacks on soft targets.

“At that time Boko Haram not only occupied the Northeast, but also unleashed fear and mayhem well beyond the region.

“It is easy to forget where Nigeria was when this administration began 2 years ago,and Boko Haram held no fewer than 14 LGAs in the Northeast.

“It was to ensure the freedom of all Boko Haram captives and recovery of lost territory that we gave the fight against terror our full attention.

“We’ve reached out to the captors and are negotiating to ensure the girls’ safe release. We’re willing to bend over backwards to achieve this.

“Let me also reiterate our absolute commitment to the freedom and safe return of the remaining Chibok girls, and all other abducted persons.

“I’m eternally grateful to God for the return of 24 of the girls, as well as of thousands of other Nigerians forcibly abducted by Boko Haram.

“Today commemorates an incident that we will never forget: the abduction, three years ago, of schoolgirls from Government Secondary School, Chibok.”

Watch as anger continues to grow over the abduction of the Chibok girls and the inability of the government to secure their rescue.
