Two years after the 2015 presidential election, a lot of Nigerians have complained that they are yet to see the change President Muhammadu Buhari and his political party, All Progressive Party promised them.
No doubt, the Buhari’s administration has partly delivered its campaign promised by almost wiping out Boko Haram terrorism in Nigeria, and his anti-corruption fight has been massive but these two might not be enough to secure the masses’ vote in 2019.
If President Buhari wants to win 2019 election, or give his political party a chance to win Nigerians’ hearts again in coming election, these are the six things ZENITHBLOG.com believes the president must deliver before 2019.
1. Good Electricity Supply
One of the sweet promises that secured the presidential seat for President Buhari in 2015, was the promise of constant power supply. The APC promised the generation, transmission and distribution of at least 20,000 megawatts of electricity within four years. When Buhari appointed Babatunde Raji Fashola, the former governor of Lagos state as minister of power, Nigerians hope was raised as people expected Nigerian electricity to witness the type of transformation witnessed by Lagos in eight years of Fashola’s administration. The reverse has been the case so far, as Nigerians have been complaining about power supply for most of the last two years.
Nigerians await the good power supply that President Buhari promised them.
2. Putting a Total End to Boko Haram
The Nigerian army under President Buhari has flushed out the Boko Haram terrorists in the once dreadful Sambisa forest, but a total end has not been put to the menace of these terrorists, especially in North-East Nigeria. There has been several attacks by the terrorists even after Sambisa was cleared.
As long as Nigerians live in fear that there is a Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, who has remained undead despite all efforts, then the battle is not yet won.
President Buhari has to put a final end to the menace of Boko Haram in Nigeria.
3. Resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP)
The scar of war can never be totally healed, but returning internally displaced persons in the North-East back to their homes will be a big step towards healing. As most of these homes and villages have been ravaged and burnt by the insurgents, the president needs to see to the rebuilding of the villages, so these unfortunate victims of Boko Haram extremists, can finally leave camp to live a normal or an almost normal life.
There is already a budget for Resettlement and Rehabilitation in the 2017 state budget of Borno state, which was mostly hit by insurgents, but other affected
4. General Security in the Country
From foreigners to Nigerians, the rate at which people are being kidnapped for ransom in the last few years, is quite alarming.
While tackling the issue of security due to terrorist attacks, President Buhari will have to fight domestic security issues as well. Most foreign countries have warned their citizens against visiting 1/3 of Nigerian states for fear that they will be kidnapped in these states.
Nigerians have constantly reports issues of people dressing like security officials to kidnap victims in broad daylight. If President Buhari must win the heart of Nigerians again, he must see to it that the people no longer live in fear of being kidnapped for ransom, or worse, rituals.
5. Anti-graft War
The corruption fight of President Muhammadu Buhari has come under attack recently after people started accusing him of using the anti-corruption war to witch-hunt his political opponents.
President Buhari must redefine his fight against corruption, and ensure that not only were looted funds recovered, but that the looters are brought to book without any compromise.
6. Foreign Exchange Rate
The exchange rate of Naira to dollar, and other foreign currency is heartbreaking. President Buhari, during the 2015 election campaign, complained that N216 to $1, as was the exchange rate back then was bad and killing our economy, since Nigeria, as a consuming nation, needs dollars to import most material.
Two years after Buhari complained about the exchange rate during his predessecor, Jonathan’s term, Nigerians are now exchanging dollars for double the price he complained about during Jonathan’s administration.
President Buhari has to do something about the value of Naira which seems to be dropping against dollar everyday.
At 406 naira to one dollar, President Buhari has failed on his promise to increase the value of Naira and this has brought difficulty to the living condition of Nigerians. If President Buhari must win back the people’s affection, he will have to do something bout the dwindling value of dollars soon.
In the video below, ZENITHBLOG.com correspondent asked Nigerians what they think about Buhari’s administration after two years in office.
