The dazzling Northern Lights
Hallgrimur Helgason lives right underneath the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. It is the most beautiful yet elusive natural light display on Earth.
Helgason explains his enviable location: “Where I live in it’s not necessary to go far—the Aurora is blasting all over. I shoot the Northern lights from my back door.”

Additionally, he says that the Lights often rush out into the night spontaneously and that the stronger they are, the more thrilling it is to watch them.
The Northern Lights are spontaneous and thrilling to watch
Auroras occur when light from the sun strikes atoms in the earth’s atmosphere, causing the atoms’ energy to rise and drop. When the energy drops, it releases a photon—the basic component of visible light.
The spectacular views are often elusive to witness and are most commonly visible in the Scandinavian countries. However, sometimes they spread further down to the United Kingdom.

However, they are occasional only, and to see them regularly, one might consider settling in the outskirts of Reykjavik—just like Helgason.
