NIA did not get Ikoyi cash from CBN – Official

– The Central Bank of Nigerian (CBN) has denied claims that the National Intelligence Agency received the controversial Ikoyi cash from it

– The apex bank said it deals directly with banks and not government agency

– The CBN also confirmed that it issues mint-fresh notes – to banks only

The Central Bank of Nigeria has dismissed claims that the N13 billion discovered from an apartment in Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was moved from the apex bank to the National Intelligence Agency.

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that the apex bank in its reaction said it deals directly with banks and not government agencies.

Since the discovery of the money stashed in the apartment, there have been several insinuations that the $42 million, £27,000 and N23 million discovered in a luxury apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos belonged to the NIA.

The reports also had it that the money was moved directly from the CBN to the apartment on behalf of the NIA for covert operations.

It is true the Central Bank of Nigeria issues mint-fresh notes, but it is only to banks.

But in his response, the spokesperson for CBN told Premium Times that: “It is true the Central Bank of Nigeria issues mint-fresh notes, but it is

only to banks.”

Okoroafor said: “After that (issuance to banks), CBN does not know which of their customers they (the banks) give those notes to and for what purpose.”

“I cannot say if the notes the NIA is claiming came from the CBN. So, I will not be able to answer questions on it for now, except I receive a specific request,” Okoroafor added.

Recall that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had called out Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike, his Ekiti counterpart Ayodele Fayose and a former minister of aviation Femi Fani-Kayode for declaring Rotimi Amaechi as the owner of the money.

APC said the attempt by the trio to push ownership of the money to Amaechi is mischievous.

Meanwhile, the minister of transport has also threatened to drag the Wike, Fayose and Fani-Kayode to court over the allegations against him.

The minister also demanded a public apology in addition to N750 million and N500 million respectively from Fani-Kayode and the media aide to Ekiti state governor Lere Olayinka as damages for linking him with the Ikoyi cash stash.
