Abayomi Akinruntan, a lawmaker representing Ilaje Constituency I in the Ondo state House of Assembly, on Tuesday, April 11, defected to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to a report on The Punch, Akinruntan decamped to the APC with some former political appointees of the former governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko at the Cocoa Conference Hall of the governor’s office Alagbaka, Akure, the state capital.
It was gathered that Akinruntan was among the 13 members of the Assembly loyal to the former speaker, Mrs. Jumoke Akindele, and the development has reduced the number of Akindele-led faction to 12.
To his end, the number of the APC members of the Assembly has increased to 10.
Giving the reasons for his defection to the APC, Akinruntan, who is the son of the businessman and monarch of Igbo Kingdom, Oba Obateru Akinruntan, explained that the yet to be resolved leadership crisis rocking the PDP both that the national and state levels was responsible for his decision.
He said: “Our decamping is not far-fetched from the happenings in the party and we are concerned that the new government has started well and we believe that coming to join the party, will add values to our lives and the lives of our people in Ilaje.”
Akinruntan commended the present administration of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, adding that the decisions taking so far by the new government in moving the state forward had convinced him to join the progressives party.
He said he had the belief that Akeredolu’s government would add great value on the lives of the masses.
Receiving the defectors, Sunday Abegunde, the secretary to the Ondo state government, said Akinruntan and others joining the APC would make the party gain more grounds in Ilaje local government area of the state.
Abegunde assured that the party will provide a level playing ground for the new entrants into the party.
According to him, “We were in Labour Party together, a two-term house of assembly member, and by his pedigree, he is a big fish because and he had embarked on various and empowerment programmes to improve the lives of his people, so his coming to the APC will add value to us.”
