A protest by supporters of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) became violent on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 following a clash with the police, who reportedly dispersed them with teargas.
The protesters were reportedly peaceful as they marched along streets in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Channels television reports that the protesters had converged on Unity Fountain, but the police sprayed them with teargas after an attempt to disperse them with water failed.
There have been constant clashes between supporters of El-Zakzaky and the police
The provocation from the police forced the protesters to march on the streets.

While addressing the protesters shortly before they were dispersed with teargas, former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Professor Chidi Odinkalu, advised the federal government to respect the rule of law by releasing the group leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.
Odinkalu is believed to have reacted to the ruling of a Federal High Court in Abuja on December 2, 2016.
The court ordered his release and awarded a cumulative sum of N50 million to the family of the Shiite leader.

The court also ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police to provide Zakzaky and his family with a new accommodation and security in any part of Kaduna or the northern region that they prefer within 45 days.
The ruling has not been obeyed by the government.
