The senator representing Bayelsa east stated this on Wednesday, April 5, via his twitter handle in reaction to the statement made by Zamfara state governor, Abdulaziz Yari.

He said: “The real sin causing meningitis is the sin of mismanaging the money budgeted to cure and prevent a disease that regularly affects Nigerians.”

On Tuesday, April 4, Governor Yari said the outbreak of “stereotype C” meningitis was God’s way of punishing Nigerians for “rampant fornication” and “nefarious activities”.

ZENITHBLOG.com learnt that the death toll from the outbreak across several states has increased to 336.

Lawal Bakare, a spokesperson of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said: “As at April 3, 2017, a total of 2,997 suspected cases of CSM have been reported in 16 States in Nigeria, of which 146 have been laboratory-confirmed. Unfortunately, 336 deaths have also been recorded.”

Symptoms of the disease includes headache, fever and loss of consciousness in patients with severe infection.

Yusuf Ibrahim, a medical expert in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), advised people to ensure good personal hygiene and sleep in well-ventilated rooms to curtail the spread of Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis (CSM).
