– The Nigerian government has announced a new policy to boost the production of tomatoes within the country

– Enelamah said policy will be implemented in collaboration with various institutions and agencies in Nigeria

The Nigerian government has announced a new policy to boost the production of tomatoes within the country.

The minister of industry, trade and investment Okechukwu Enelamah while speaking on Tuesday, April 11, in Abuja said the new policy is in line with federal government’s objective to boost production, improve the value and attract investment.

Enelamah said policy which was developed recently will be implemented in collaboration with the federal ministry of agriculture and rural development, the federal ministry of finance and federal ministry of water resources.

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that other agencies involved in the implementation are the Central Bank of Nigeria, Bank of Industry and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

The minister also said the policy is targeted at increasing local production of fresh tomato fruit required for fresh fruit consumption and processing; increase local production of tomato concentrate and reduce post-harvest losses.

Recall that the federal government had last month announced the arrival of fresh tomatoes at the Lagos railway from Kano for the first time in 58 years.

Emmanuel Itoya Ijewere one of Nigeria’s eminent businessman with extensive experience and interests across the banking, finance and agricultural spectrums.

Ijewere said that at N200,000 per tonne, the country lost tomatoes worth N5.6 billion.
