Do not only make pronouncements on declaring road blocks illegal but enforce the ban – group tells IG

A human rights group has said the police authority should not only make pronouncement on banning illegal road blocks but should also enforce the pronouncement

– The group, Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, had earlier indicted the Delta state commissioner of police over illegal collection on the highway

– It said enforcement of the ban would save motorists from the trouble with police officers on the road

A human rights group, Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, on Monday, called on the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, not only to declare road blocks illegal but should also enforce the ban and pull all the road blocks still in some roads out of the way.

On Sunday night, the police high command issued a directive banning all road blocks mounted by the police in the different parts of the country, declaring it illegal and charging all police commissioners to ensure compliance in their respective states.

The ban, ZENITHBLOG.com reports, may not be unconnected with reported calls and cries of Nigerians over the continuous illegal road blocks leading to collection of N50 and N100 from motorists, motorcycle and tricycle riders all over the country.

Almost every road in the country has been taken over by police, although aimed at security measures which many have commended, some have converted same to opportunity to milk innocent motorists along the roads.

Chairman of the group in Delta, Prince Kehinde Taiga, had earlier on Sunday indicted the state commissioner of police, Ibrahim Zannah, as allegedly being in support of the act in the state.

But at the wake of the ban, the committee is calling on the police high command to enforce the ban beyond mere pronouncement and sanction erring members of the force who violate the directive of the police authorities.
