Sahara Reporters is reporting that Senator Dino Merlaye was named in a 2008 US State Department report on the murder of one Victor Obafaiye.

ZENITHBLOG.com learnt that the report focused on the murder of Obafaiye who was a principal witness against Senator Dino Melaye in an electoral petition against the controversial legislator from Kogi state.

Victor Obafaiye was said to have been assassinated in 2007.

Sahara Reporters said the report was issued on March 11, 2008 and written by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Report.

According to the report, Dino Melaye was elected into the Federal House of Representatives on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a result which was disputed by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

class="align-left">Consequently, the ACN filed a legal challenge disputing his election while Mr. Obafaiye, was said to be in possession of documents that might have shown that Mr. Melaye tampered with election results.

The report read: “On August 19, Victor Obafaiye, the principal witness for the Action Congress in the Kogi state election tribunal, was assassinated. Obafaiye was crucial to the case, as he was supposedly in possession of documents that would have served as evidence of election tampering by the PDP House of Assembly [sic] candidate, Dino Melaye.”

ZENITHBLOG.com however learnt that the report did not directly accuse Mr. Melaye of masterminding Mr. Obafaiye’s murder.

Sahara Reporters says the report however suggested that the US considered the case one of the significant instances where the use of violence undercuts the practices of electoral democracy in Nigeria.

ZENITHBLOG.com recalls that Dino Melaye has been embroiled in in certificate scandal for the past few weeks.
