Boko Haram: Hunters take drastic step as they do the unspeakable in public

Hundreds of hunters from Adamawa, Gombe, Borno, Yobe and Taraba states gathered on Saturday, April 1, for the annual Talala (oath taking) festival in Mayo-Belwa local government area of Adamawa state.

Highlights of the occasion were the drinking of concoction by the members for protection

The annual festival brings hunters together to renew their oath to serve humanity, particularly assisting security agencies to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency in the north east, Daily Post reports.

At the occasion, hunters do what they call ‘fortification’ otherwise known as charm renewal. Members drink concoction for protection and rituals are conducted on their dane guns to function properly against Boko Haram fighters and enemy hunters in the north east who also have knowledge of the terrain.

Addressing the hunters, chairman of Adamawa Hunters Association/Acting Chairman for North East, Malam Mohammed Tola, called on his colleagues to remain committed in

serving their communities and their fatherland.

He commended the government and the Adamawa traditional council for their support to the hunters.

According to him, their support had gone a long way in facilitating their activities of the hunters especially the fight against insurgents in the region.

The women leader Aisha Bakari pledged the commitment of female hunters to continue to contribute their quota like their male counterparts.

Also speaking, the secretary of the association said ceremony was to recognize genuine members and expose fake ones.

Civilians have been assisting security agents in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency in the north east.

In January, local vigilantes killed seven suspected Boko Haram fighters and seized a machine gun in Sabongari village in Madagali, Adamawa state.
