The lead story on The Punch is that of Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the wife of ailing President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that her husband’s health is not as bad as some people have made people to believe.

Mrs. Buhari said this in a message on her Twitter handle, @aishambuhari, and her Facebook page, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, May 2.

She said her husband had continued to carry out his constitutional responsibilities as the President without hindrance.

She wrote: “I thank all Nigerians for their concern, love and prayers over my husband’s health status.

“I wish to inform everyone that his health is not as bad as it is being perceived. Meanwhile, he continues to carry out his responsibilities during this period.

“As it may come to your notice, he is meeting with Minister of Justice and GMD of NNPC this evening (Tuesday).”

Aisha Buhari’s statement comes hours after President Muhammadu Buhari resumed work and met separately with the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Maikanti Baru, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari’s resumption at his office triggered speculation and growing concerns about his health. However, presidency sources have informed This Day that the reports on the president’s health have been grossly exaggerated.

A source on Tuesday, May 2, reiterated the statement by one of the president’s spokesmen Garba Shehu that Buhari had been advised by his doctors to rest more and take things slowly after his medical vacation in the United Kingdom.

He added that now he has resumed work, he would likely chair the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday, May 3.

Since his return from the UK, Buhari has not attended any public function and was unable to attend two cabinet meetings last month and the Jumat service last Friday, April 28 at the Presidential Villa.

Moving on, three former Heads of State, all retired generals – Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar met in Minna, Niger state, to discuss the state of affairs of the country, Vanguard reports.

The closed-door meeting, which was held at General Babangida’s Hilltop mansion in Minna lasted for about three hours.

In the past couple of days, the polity has been awash with concerns over President Muhammadu Buhari’s health, with Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka; former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. In a statement issued in Kaduna Tuesday, May 2, the forum called on Nigerians to stop making careless and unnecessary statement on the health status of the president.

The ACF statement was in apparent reaction to a statement by some prominent Nigerians urging the president to take a medical leave to attend to his health.

But in a statement yesterday, the secretary of the ACF, Muhammadu Ibrahim Biu said what Nigerians need to do for the president was to pray for him.

Meanwhile, The Guardian has reported that the federal government, in the last two years have supported states financially to the tune of N1.75 trillion.

The funds were, however, “extra-statutory,” as they were not captured in the budget.

‘’The first time (April 24), the club decided to send Mikel to Britain for diagnosis and treatment.

‘’On the 26th, the doctor diagnosed an inguinal hernia and adductor muscle injury, and two operations were successfully completed on 29 April, and he is expected to resume training after one week,” the club said.
