The Enugu and Anambra states commands of the Nigeria police, has said it is ready to handle all excesses encountered during the planned protest of IPOB/MASSOB on Tuesday, May 30.

According to Daily Post, the command warned pro-Biafra agitators against unlawful activities following the May 30 sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The state commands gave this warning in separate statements issued on Monday, May 29.

Speaking with newsmen ahead of the planned exercise, Anambra state Commissioner of Police, Samuel Okaula, said the police were battle ready for anyone who was out to take the law into his hands.

According to the police boss, “We have always been prepared for this type of situation but one thing remains clear, we want to assure the people of the state to go about their lawful duties and businesses.

“There is no cause for alarm and I can assure you that all the black spots have been taken care of.

“We have enough manpower on ground and we have deployed them effectively to take care of all flash points.”

The commissioner said the command was determined to maintain the security position of the state as the safest in the country.

He warned that “those, who have decided to make life unbearable for others should be prepared to face the consequences.

“We have achieved a lot to contain crimes and criminalities for the people and business to thrive; we shall not allow these elements to set us back again.”

On its part, the Enugu State Police Command has advised members of the public to disregard such order and go about their normal lawful business.

The command also urged law-abiding members of the public to watch out for any person or group of persons under any guise and who will come to intimidate, threaten or force them to shut down their offices or shops.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, the command in partnership with other sister security agencies and relevant bodies had put in place adequate machinery to fish out those in this habit and bring them to book.

He further advised those intending to carry out this unpatriotic and unlawful act to change from this “as the command working in partnership with other sister agencies in the state will not sit and fold its arms to see innocent and law abiding citizens of the state being molested or threatened by any person or group of persons.”

ZENITHBLOG.com earlier reported that the IPOB had declared a sit-at-home on May 30 saying it was to remember those who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War.

In a similar vein Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC) has said it will hold Acting President Yemi Osinbajo responsible should anything happen to pro-Biafra agitators as they protest on May 30.

There are fears over alleged plans by security operatives to open fire on the agitators who shall be observing a sit-at-home to mark the 50th year of Biafra declaration.

It is on this premise that the OYC has said that “Ndigbo shall hold Osinbajo responsible as the Acting President of Nigeria should anything happen to any of our youths”.

OYC’s assertion was made in a press statement made available to journalists, which was signed by the groups’s deputy national president and the national scribe, Dr. Arthur Obiora and Mazi Okwu Nnabuike.

“We shall not take lightly the spilling of the blood of any Igbo man today because these are non-violent agitators and their agitation is protected under every known law.

“As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo is very much aware of the constitutional rights of these agitators and he should therefore not allow himself to be used as an instrument to suppress lawful expression of opinion.

“He should, as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria call all security agencies to order to ensure that they do not engage in mass murder.

“We have had enough of this mindless killing of our people and we are not going to take it again this time,” OYC said.

The group called on Igbo traders and workers to comply with the sit-at-home order of the pro-Biafra groups, stressing that “the international community is watching; so, if we can show unity as a people, if we can show solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu and Uchenna Madu, the leaders of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, respectively; the United Nations and other international organizations will not just accord us respect but help us in pushing for a referendum.”
