The University was founded in 1962 with the help of the Northern Region of Nigeria at that time. Nowadays it is one of the largest and the most authoritative Universities in Nigeria and even in Africa.

It has twelve Faculties, eighty-two Departments, twelve Research Institutes, and Centres. ABU gives undergraduate and postgraduate education in a plenty of specialties. Among them are technical, humanitarian, and medical faculties

Among the graduates of ABU, there is former President, Umaru Musa Yar’adua. Three Vice Presidents graduated from this University: Oladipo Diya, Atiku Abubakar, and Namadi Sambo. One speaker was also a student of ABU Zaria.

Also two first ladies: Turai Yar’adua and Aisha Buhari studied in ABU. The following famous alumni are Chief Justices of Nigeria: Alouysius Katsina-Alu, san, Idris Legbo Kutigi, san, Dahiru Musdapher, san. In the list, we can mention three Secretaries of the Federation Government: Gidado Idris, Mahmud Yayele Ahmed, Babachir David Lawal. Moreover the Service Federation Head, Doctor Danladi Irmiya Kifasiwas was a student of ABU too.
