Chief of Army Staff has shown terrorism can be degraded, group hails Buratai's new award

– A human rights group has commended the recent award given to the chief of army staff Tukur Buratai

– The group said the award presented to the army chief by the Brazilian military is deserving

– The group also said the Brazilian Military Order of Merit Award given to Buratai is an indication that the global community understands that terrorism has been defeated in Nigeria

A human rights group has commended the recent award given to the chief of army staff Tukur Buratai.

The group Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) in Abuja on Sunday, April 30, told journalists that the recent conferment of the Brazilian Military Order of Merit Award is an indication that the global community understands that terrorism has been defeated in Nigeria.

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that the secretary general of CESJET Isaac Ikpa said the chief of army staff has also demonstrated that terrorism and extremism can be degraded

Ikpa said the award given to Buratai by the Brazilian military is deserving.

He said: “The award is well deserved given the dispatch with which the Nigerian Army under General Buratai’s leadership subdued the Boko Haram problem and dealt with other threats to Nigeria’s safety, security and sovereignty.”

Ikpa also said the award given to Buratai has diminished all efforts to downgrade the gallantry of the Nigerian Army and its troops under the leadership of the current chief of army staff.

“We therefore advise that Intersociety and any other CSO that is contemplating intervention on this level should first familiarize themselves with the nuances of international protocols. It will upgrade their mental capacity to process and deliver the requisite appreciation for them to know that it is not in their place to, based on their narrow clannish reasoning, castigate another sovereign country’s decision to honour an achiever.”

Buratai was able to achieve this feat where others failed before him and in spite of the foreign support that Nigeria’s adversaries enjoy.

He said: “The achievement was recorded beginning from a time when an ill advised arms embargo was in place against Nigeria.

“We must not forget that those who contrived the false reports that precipitated the arms embargo have an agenda in the first place.

“General Buratai’s success effectively truncated this agenda. Brazil recognizes this success as significant to the survival of countries that are the new economic powerhouses of the world and appropriately rewarded it.”

“It is therefore no surprise that the proxies of these entities with agenda against the stability of Nigeria are bitter. The Buratai led Nigerian Army has effectively prevented them from fulfilling their terms of contract that relates to destabilizing Nigeria.

Kinsman hits Jonathan hard, reveals multiple areas where he betrayed Nigerians

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has been described as a greater betrayal than Nigerians as claimed by Jonathan

– His kinsman in Bayelsa state has revealed various areas Jonathan betrayed Nigerians

– He said Jonathan should blame himself rather than blaming Nigerians over his 2015 poor outing

Former security adviser to the Bayelsa state government, Chief Perekeme Richard Kpodoh, has said that the loss of the former President Goodluck Jonathan during the 2015 poll was the payback from those he had betrayed politically.

Kpodoh, who was the interim chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Bayelsa state, said though the claims of the former President that he was betrayed by politicians was a mere blame game, noting that the defeat and eventual acceptance of defeat during the last presidential election showed he was repaid for betraying the people of the Niger Delta.

Kpodoh, who was reacting to the much talked ‘Against the Run of Play’ written by Segun Adeniyi, chairman of the editorial board of ThisDay newspapers, said Jonathan betrayed trust in the area of infrastructural development, the one tenure agreement with the PDP and the former governors of Rivers and Bayelsa states, Rotimi Amaechi and Timipre Sylva respectively.

‎He argued that though the book is filled with contentious claims and finger pointing by the former President, “he should know that those he betrayed waited for him during the presidential election to have their own pound of flesh. The loss at the poll was self-inflicted.

Jonathan is the master of betrayal. He betrayed Amaechi by allowing his wife to engage a sitting governor in a disgraceful public battle.

“He betrayed Timipre Sylva by ensuring he did not contest for second term after covering him up for years of financial misdeed in Bayelsa.

He betrayed Obasanjo who brought him to power by using the daughter to disgrace him for writing a letter to correct him on national issues.

“He betrayed the people of the Niger Delta by refusing to change their status with roads and other infrastructure.

“He has even betrayed the writer of the book by claiming it is filled with errors. The people have paid him back and he should stop this ongoing public disgrace.‎

Kpodoh argued that the people of the North east voted against the PDP and Jonathan because they felt betrayed over the issues of the Chibok girls and the partial state of emergency invoked by the former administration.

He said Jonathan’s presidency never wanted the people of North east to vote, adding that they shocked him by coming out en-masse to vote despite threat of Boko Haram.

On the reported claim by the former President that President Buhari succeeded against Boko Haram because he is from the North‎, Kpodoh said the claim is a defeatist way of argument, noting: “PMB won against Boko Haram because he is committed to the nation’s unity.

Police arrest driver who buys food, fuel for Boko Haram

– Police arrest Modu Mustapha, the man who supplies food, fuel to Boko Haram terrorists

– The suspect was arrested after a tip-off by members of the public

– Police also arrested three men who specialized in adulterating grind-pepper, mixing it with sawdust and flower waste, then selling same to public as pepper

The Police Command in Borno state on Sunday, April 30, said that it had arrested a driver, Modu Mustapha, suspected to be purchasing fuel and food items for Boko Haram insurgents.

Damian Chukwu, the Commissioner of Police in the state, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri, Borno state capital, adding that the suspect was arrested after a tip-off by members of the public.

He said: “The police have received information that one Modu Mustapha of Jumptilo village was a terrorists’ collaborator, who buys fuel and food for them, at Alagarno and other hideout.

“The police descended on the suspect, who has confessed to the crime.”

Chukwu said that the driver usually fetched firewood in the bush, from where he was suspected to have met the terrorists.

The police commissioner said: “He said that he had been buying things for the insurgent group.

“We recovered N10, 000 from the suspect, which the terrorists gave him to buy bicycle spare parts for them.”

Chukwu said the suspect also named 15 other firewood vehicle drivers, who engaged in similar crime.

According to him, the police are yet to establish the motive of the driver buying things for the insurgents.

“We have not been able to establish his reasons for buying things for them, whether he is under the influence of spell, coerced into doing it, or doing it willingly as their collaborator,” said Chukwu

He said that because of the nature of the alleged crime, it would be transferred to the military for further action.

I am a Biafran – Former presidential aspirant declares

– Chief Iwuanyanwu says he remains a Biafran as an Igboman

– However, he noted that Biafra is part of Nigeria, as Arewa and Oduduwa are also part of the country

– Iwuanyanwu says it was wrong for the government to level treason charges against IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu

Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, a former presidential aspirant, has said that he belongs to Biafra, and that he remains a Biafran as an Igboman, Vanguard reports.

Iwuanyanwu’s statement comes on the heels of the recent release of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu from prison.

According to Iwuanyanwu, it was wrong for the government to level treason charges against Kanu, adding that what Kanu has been doing is mere expression of public opinion.

The publisher of Daily Champion newspaper said it is no act of offence let alone an act of treason.

Speaking at Amokwe in Udi local government area of Enugu state when he paid condolence visit to the family of late political scientist, Prof. Godwin Odenigwe, Iwuanyanwu said: “I have always said that was no reason detaining Nnamdi Kanu. In the law of this country which I know unless you have arms. Nnamdi Kanu didn’t commit any treason. Treason is when you take up arms against the government, he didn’t take up any arms, there was no reason whatsoever for detaining him, because everybody have the right to say I want Biafra, everybody have the right to say I want Biafra. For God’s sake, I’ve made it clear to people that Biafra is for the Igbo. Hausas are Arewas, Yorubas are Oduduwas and we are Biafrans.

“There is a problem we have because Biafra fought a war and people are ashamed to say they are Biafrans but I am not afraid to say I am a Biafran. Biafra is part of Nigeria, Arewa is part of Nigeria, Oduduwa is part of Nigeria; all of us are there.

“If a person from Odududuwa takes up arms to secede from Nigeria, its treason but if one is just saying by words of mouth, it just an ordinary expression of public opinion. There is no law that makes such a person get convicted by just saying we want to secede, it’s a right of expression.”

READ ALSO: Man’s leg falls into lagoon after ghastly accident on Third Mainland Bridge

He added: “But if somebody from Oduduwa is amassing arms to topple the government to secede, its treason. If somebody from Arewa is amassing arms to topple the government, its treason, if somebody from Biafra, because all of us are from Biafra I am from Biafra, to topple government, its treason.

“But if I come and say I want Biafra, it’s no offence. To the best of my knowledge Kanu didn’t have any violent means; all he said was that he wanted Biafra. He shouldn’t have been detained in the first place, I said it long ago. I said the government is making him a hero but people misquoted me and said I said government should jail him.

“No, I said that getting an innocent person, putting him in prison, they are making him a hero. So what Nnamdi Kanu is now is a hero because of all these. So he has not committed any offence and shouldn’t have been in detention in the first place.

“But there are also some parts of Igbo, who since after the war, they don’t want to talk about Biafra. You cannot wish away Biafra, Biafra is there just like you can’t wish away Oduduwa or Arewa.”

Earlier, ZENITHBLOG.com reported that Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu who is also a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and an elder statesman, had emphasized the need for the country to restructure.

Iwuanyanwu reiterated this position in Ibadan after he chaired the first session of the 22nd synod of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Ibadan Diocese, at the Cathedral of St. James the Great, Oke-Bola on Friday, April 21.

He said that politics was a game of number that the Igbos were at a disservice due to the current form of government.

ZENITHBLOG.com reported that Nnamdi Kanu was freed on Friday, April 28, after meeting his bail conditions which IPOB and family members said was too stringent.

However, Senators Ekweremadu and Abaribe played a major role in perfecting Kanu’s bail conditions.

Ogungbeje wants the court to suspend action on the forfeiture application filed by the anti-corruption agency until the EFCC has found out the owner of the money.

Ogungbeje is praying that the court order the EFCC to provide a report of its preliminary or final investigation on ownership of the monies and how the funds got into the building.

He also urged the court to order the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) as well as the police force to start a thorough investigation of the recovered funds.

Ogungbeje said: “This honourable court has the inherent jurisdiction under Section 6 (6)(b) of the Constitution to order and direct thorough investigation of the sources of the monies, their owners, the owners of the Osborne Towers where the monies were found and how they got into the building.

“A thorough and transparent investigation of the monies will strengthen the anti-corruption crusade.

“Nigerians are interested in the sources, owners of the monies, owners of the building and how the monies got into Osborne Residential apartment.”

Recall that ZENITHBLOG.com had earlier reported that a court in Lagos state ordered that the $43,449,947, £27,800 and N23,218,000 recovered by the EFCC from an apartment in the Ikoyi area of the state be temporarily forfeited to the Nigerian government.

In a ruling on Thursday, April 13 afternoon, Justice Muslim Hassan of the Federal High Court in Lagos ordered that the funds be handed over to the Federal Government for now.

The judge then adjourned the matter till May 5, 2017 for anyone who wants to claim the funds and give reasons why it should not be permanently forfeited to the government to show up before him.

How Police found documents in Senator Goje’s home concerning popular Islamic cleric's assasination

– Nigeria Police found documents in Senator Danjuma Goje’s home concerning Sheikh Ja’afar Adam’s murder

– But the files are already in the public domain

– Sheikh Ja’afar is a popular Islamic cleric whose assasination has still not been resolved

A report by Premium Times indicates that the documents the Nigeria Police found in the home of Senator Danjuma Goje concerning the murder of Sheikh Ja’afar Adam are already in the public domain.

The Nigerian Police had on Thursday, April 27 said apart from the millions of cash it found in the Asokoro residence of Goje, documents including ”a file containing write-ups on how Governor Shekarau plotted the assassination of Sheikh Ja’afar” were retrieved from the residence.

Some of the senator’s aides said they were shocked by the police claim.

“The senator has made it clear he had nothing to do with the alleged documents on the murder of Sheikh Ja’afar,” one of them, Abbas Saleh, said.

He said what the police found was a printout of a report published by Sahara Reporters in 2009.

“It is therefore something that has been in public domain,” Mr. Saleh said.

Shekarau himself has threatened to sue the Nigerian Police for defamation of character over the allegation.

Speaking to the Hausa service of the BBC via his spokesperson, Sule Ya’u, the former governor said he suspected that the document the police said they found in Goje’s house was an old one written by the then Kano state opposition camp to unfairly blame him for the murder of the cleric.

“I also have that document. Several other people here in Kano also have it and I am sure it is the the same document that former Governor Goje also has. If it is a different one, the police should come out and explain to Nigerians,” he said.

Sheikh Ja’afar was gunned down inside a mosque as he observed the early morning prayer on April 13, 2007.

Opinions were divided at the time as to those behind the murder. While, some belief the Sheikh was killed by the extremist group, Boko Haram, many others said Shekarau, governor of Kano at the time, might be behind the murder because the cleric was one of his major critics.

Boko Haram never claimed responsibility for the murder and the police are yet to inform Nigerians on how far it has gone in investigating those behind crime.

Meanwhile, the Sokoto branch of Jibwis Nigeria, has asked Senator Goje to give a vivid and convincing explanation about how, when and why the documents where found in his home.

In a statement signed by Anas Muhammad Sani, the group asked the senator some vital questions:

1. What’s your connection with the said documents – the killing in other words?

2. In what capacity are the documents in your disposal?

3. For how long do you intend to reserve the documents had it been police didn’t raid your house?

4. Were you part of the brutal assassination?

Minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is fit enough to stand for reelection.

Amaechi insists that Buhari can run for another term of four years as Nigeria’s president

His words: “If you look at the president since he came to the country, you will see there is a huge improvement.

“He’s regaining his weight. This is a 74-year old man, he is no longer a 58-old man, he is not 50…he is not a young man.”

What Nigerians should be more worried about, Amaechi said, is his ability [or lack thereof] to provide good leadership and deliver on the campaign promises he made.

When asked if he would support Buhari if he stands for re-election in 2019, Amaechi replied in affirmative, saying: “I will advise that he should.”

He continued: “The president is fit enough to govern and if he makes the decision to run again, if he does, I don’t think there is anything wrong in supporting him.”

The reason for his outburst is unknown, but it could be connected to the recent outrage in some parts of the country, following revelations of lopsided recruitment into the Department of State Service (DSS).

Earlier, ZENITHBLOG.com reported that the latest DSS recruitments were heavily skewed in favour of the north and in particular, Katsina, the home state of President Buhari and the Director-General of the DSS.

It was gathered that 51 of the 479 new recruits came from Katsina, which is more than the 42 new cadets recruited from the six South-South states.

Whereas Katsina had 51 new cadets, the distribution in the six South-South states is as follows: Rivers 7, Delta 8, Edo 6, Cross River 9, Bayelsa 7 and Akwa Ibom, 5. Outrage over DSS lopsided recruitment that favoured the north

– There is currently outrage in some parts of the country

– This is due to the lopsided recruitment into the Department of State Service (DSS)

– Many say it is a continuing effort by the present administration to stamp a northern character on all strands of the federal bureaucracy

A report by Vanguard has detailed how the recent lopsided recruitment into the DSS has generated outrage across the country.

Senator Ekweremadu, the highest ranking Igbo political office holder said the reality on ground for the people of the South-east was that of exclusion from the Buhari administration.

He however spoke against the background of controversies surrounding the replacement of the board of the National Pension Commission, PenCom where the former Director-General, Mrs Chinelo Anohu-Amazu from Anambra state was sacked recently.

Outrage over federal government’s lopsided DSS recruitment

President Buhari has appointed mostly northerners into key government positions since assuming power in 2015

Anohu-Amazu was sacked two years into her statutory five year tenure and replaced by Aliyu Dikko from Kaduna state against the provisions of the Pension Reforms Act, 2014.

Section 21(2) of PRA 2014 provides that ‘In the event of a vacancy, the President shall appoint a replacement from the geo-political zone of the immediate past member that vacated office to complete the remaining tenure’.

Some Northern elements also joined the fray, with Dr Junaid Mohammed describing the present administration as nepotistic.

Niger Delta activist, Ms Ankio-Briggs, said: “I think this is unacceptable. It is not surprising because that is what this government has done since it came. Its appointment has favoured the North.

“Some of us now refer to the federal government as government of the Northern Republic of Nigeria. They have changed from federal character to northern character.

“The government of the day is not listening to what Nigerians are saying, Nigerians are complaining everyday against nepotism in the system. They have taken more employment for themselves. Everything about Nigeria is skewed against us. We begin to wonder what exactly binds us together if it is not the oil and gas.”

Mrs Fila Henshaw, a onetime governorship aspirant in Cross River state, said: “It is unfortunate that some people when given position of leadership fail to understand that they have become the fathers of all.”

Outrage over federal government’s lopsided DSS recruitment

The DSS boss, Lawal Daura and President Buhari obviously favoured their kinsmen in the recruitment exercise

On his part, the chairman, National Conscience Party, Katsina state chapter, Abdulmumini Shehu Sani said President Buhari administration has continued to breach the principles of the federal character in his appointment and recruitment exercises.

His words: “President Buhari has not been abiding by the principle of federal character. He has ignored the rule of law. He violated the rule of law.

“He should put into consideration other people from other areas and that way nobody will cry foul. And by doing so, he would be just to all.The issue of ethno-religious crisis will be addressed.”

Also speaking, former leader of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, Ledum Mitee said: ‘’You cannot allocate more slots of the secret police to a section of the country. It portends danger for national security because the secret police is a very key component of national security.

‘’When you structure it in a manner that it is populated by those from a section of the country then it is unfair and unacceptable.’’

Former Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Rowland Owie, blamed those advising Buhari on his appointments as enemies of the nation.

He said: “If you look at the way and manner the Igbo are being treated in this country, it is very unfair. Their people in government are being removed every day and replaced with Hausa. I wonder what those advising the President want for this nation. You cannot beat a child and expect that child not to cry.

“While I congratulate members of the National Assembly who are striving hard to carry out their legitimate functions, I urge them to remember that it is the legislative arm that makes any government democratic because, even with a military regime, the executive and judiciary arms are always there, and as representatives of the people, they should rise and save this country, that is now in very terrible situation, from total ruin, especially as Buhari handlers have become very undemocratic.’’

Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, through its state publicity secretary, Chris Nehikhare said: “It’s tragic that a federal government that was voted in mainly to balance the illogical and widely condemned quota system and federal character doctrine is the same federal government encouraging nepotism and ethnic profiling to determine employees in federal government agencies.’’

A Benin based legal practitioner, Mr Olayiwola Afolabi, described the latest DSS recruitment as “Corruption in Appointments”.

His words: “The president has been getting away with such lopsided appointments in the past because Nigerians have refused to confront him constitutionally. We can no longer take this.

“His lopsided appointees have never worked for the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians and it is time we resort to merit in appointments so that the country can take its place in the comity of developed nations.”

Northern governors settles rift between Emir Sanusi and Governor Ganduje

– Five northern governors at the weekend brokered peace between the Kano state government and Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II

– The governor and the emir have been embroiled in a proxy war in recent times

A report by Daily Trust indicates that five northern governors have brokered peace between the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido and Governor Abdulahi Ganduje of Kano state.

The governor and the emir have been embroiled in a proxy war in recent times, especially since the emir’s consistent criticism ofthe Kano state government.

The governors who organised the meeting are Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto, Nasiru El-Rufa’i of Kaduna, Kashim Shettima of Borno, Aminu Masari of Katsina and Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger.

The meeting held at the Government House in Kaduna and was first attended by the emir and the governors before they were joined by some senior officials from the Kano state government and the Emirate Council.

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that Governors Tambuwal, Shettima and El-Rufai had earlier met with Ganduje in Abuja on Thursday, April 27 night before resolving to invite the Emir to Kaduna the following day.

Sources said Governor Tambuwal was the one that first identified governors with close relationships to both the Emir and Ganduje and he mobilized the two meetings even though all the governors, particularly El-Rufa’i and Shettima showed keen interest in resolving the matter given their individual friendship with the emir.

During the first meeting in Abuja, Ganduje opened up to his colleagues on what he described as the emir’s “clear disrespect for his office as governor of Kano state.”

He said the Emir was behaving as if he was independent of the state government whereas he is an appointee of the government who is answerable to a commissioner, not even to the governor. The governor, it was learnt, vented his frustration with the emir and said he was determined to remind him that he had limits.

Emir Sanusi’s recent comments have riled up the largely conservative elements in the north

The three governors were said to have strongly urged Ganduje to forgive the emir in the interest of stability in Kano, which they said is the heartbeat of Northern Nigeria,

At the Kaduna meeting, Emir Sanusi was said to have accepted his “faults” after the five governors reminded him that he was an appointee of the governor and his palace was being funded with public funds approved by the governor.

Oba Akiolu was said to have gotten wind of the deal later and allegedly stopped the development even when Ooni had invested hugely in it. Ooni was said to have sought audience with the Lagos Oba and pleaded with him, reeling out details of how far he had come with the project.

But the Oba of Lagos, the source further said, declined all entreaties and insisted that for any development to continue on the property, Ooni must pay royalty, which was said to be running into several millions of naira.

He therefore sought Oba Akiolu’s understanding and pleaded for a reduction, which Akiolu allegedly declined to grant, insisting he either pays the sum or forgets about the development.

Thus, the Ooni, the source said, quickly rallied some of his dependable friends for assistance before he came up with the money. But as fate would have it, a few months after this encounter, Ogunwusi became the Ooni of Ife.

His words: “That is the truth of this bitterness, at least, what we can link this to. The Oba of Lagos hasn’t completely gotten over the emergence of ‘Yeye and against the backdrop of how he treated him.

“We were always at the palace in Idugaran nearly every day, prostrating for Akiolu with ‘Yeye, just for him to relax his stand a bit, but he was adamant as if his sole aim was to jeopardise the project. ‘Yeye was at the palace for many days, only going to beg and plead with the Oba to reduce what he was asking for and not to dissuade him from asking for what was due to him. But all fell on deaf ears.

“’Yeye was forced to raise that money because a lot was at stake. But even if ‘Yeye had not become Ooni, he still has his respect for age and the throne as a child born into royalty, who was also raised with strict adherence to tradition. I mean, apart from that, ‘Yeye has never had any untoward interaction with Oba Akiolu that would warrant snubbing him in public the way he did.”

Meanwhile, the Laroka of Wanikin-Ife, Oba Kole Ojutalayo, has said Oba Ogunwusi has forgiven Oba Akiolu.

Oba Ojutalayo, who is also the Chairman of ‘40 New Dawn Oba’ in Ile Ife, said Oba Akiolu would be given a warm embrace anytime he visited the Ooni in his palace.

Ojutalayo told The Punch that sthe Ooni was interested in the success of his unity project than any battle of supremacy, adding that Ogunwusi would not stop respecting Akiolu in spite of the incident.

His words: “There has been so much said about what happened between Oba Akiolu and our father, the Ooni of Ife. We must look at it from the standpoint of the Ooni, who is holding in his hand the mantle of peace and in word and deed, he remains a man of peace. I am sure in his heart, he has already forgiven Oba Akiolu.

“This is another history and it is always in the making, but there is nothing sweeter than having peace and at the end of the day, when the Oba of Lagos comes to Ife, it will be with warm embrace from the magnanimous heart of the Ooni.”
