The church has failed Nigeria – Adeboye

Pastor Folu Adeboye said leadership is Nigeria’s major problem

The wife of the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Enoch Adeboye has said that the church has failed in taking leadership matter seriously in the country.

Folu Adeboye said poor leadership has been Nigeria’s major problem and hindrance to socio-political development.

Speaking at the Pastor Enoch Adeboye annual birthday public lecture which was delivered by Pastor Femi Atoyebi in Ikeja, Lagos, she said excellent leadership in the church would have translated to good leadership in the affairs of the nation.

She further called on the church to review its leadership process which has become important to the development of Nigeria as a nation.

“If there is going to be any good leadership, excellent leadership should be from the church but it is very unfortunate that the worst leadership is from the church. God is sending the message to us today that we should go and re-examine the level of our leadership.

“Are we in true leadership or we are thoughtful; this is a take home message for us because it is very important to us,” Adeboye said.

She also urged the church leadership to direct their children to basic traditional values in accordance to cultures and morals in Nigeria.

She noted that leadership is the core problem that we have in Nigeria and must be addressed from the church.

“We all sit in our various homes, comment on happenings in the country but do you remove the lids from your own eyes before you start complaining about the current leadership,” she said.

“Things are changing and I want you to be part of the change, let us go back home and renew our position as elders. I want us to take time to be with our children and go back to the basics.

“The Bible says godliness with contentment is a great gain, we couldn’t have had anything like corruption in our country if everybody had been contented with whatever he is and wherever situation he is or can afford, but people want to do more than they are.

They show their children what they are not; whereas they are nothing and such child would build on that and never be satisfied in the school or among his colleagues because at home he has never been trained to be satisfied.

“We know how all of us started, in the morning your parents give you ‘ogi’ with one piece of akara and if you did not take it before going to school, you will come back to take it because they will not give you more food.

Adeboye also said it has become necessary that all Christians go back to the foundation and stick to the basics of life even while teaching same to their children.

But today, your children have options and as a result, their life is not streamlined, they lack guidance. Back to the basics “Brethren, let us go back to the basics. We should respect our position as elders, this is very important.

We can only respect ourselves as elders when we talk like elders, think like elders, make decisions like elders. Elders should stomach lots of things; there are things elders should not say.

“We should assume our positions as elders, we should be father, teacher, leader and pastors to our children and also let us show leadership across, all over, not in our homes alone but also in the society,” Adeboye said.
