Four Ugandan couples who have been together for at least 25 years have shared their secrets to having a long and happy marriage.
The Gumisirizas have been together for 43 years
Gad and Eunice Gumisiriza, from Mbarara District, have been together for 43 years. They attribute their long marriage to their commitment to each other as well as their efforts to keep it interesting and not dull.
They also advise that couples should not shy away from confronting challenges, noting that once these are overcome, the bond between them becomes even stronger.

The Matsikos
The second couple is Hosea and Edith Matsiko, who have been together for 32 years. They are both spiritual and say that what has kept them together is their view of marriage as a covenant and not a contract. They add that understanding between couples is vital, as are mutual respect and a deference to God.

For their part, Jack and Teddy Mukulu, who have been married for 27 years, say that trust in God and in each other has kept them together through thick and thin.
They point to the centrality of prayer in their union as another key factor. They also advise couples not to view disagreements as obstacles but as means to talk about issues in order to resolve them and strengthen their unions.
The Mukulus
Aggrey and Florence Bananywa have notched 31 years of marriage and attribute this achievement to their faith in God. They also talk through their disagreements and acknowledge their mutual imperfections. They advise that trust is critical in maintaining a long marriage and urge couples to cultivate trust in each other.

The Bananywas
The couples spoke to Uganda’s Daily Monitor as part of its “Just The Two Of Us” Valentine’s Day campaign to promote the institution of marriage in society.
