Two customs officials who were declared wanted following the recovery of 661 pump rifles by the Nigeria Customs Service have surrendered and have been arrested.

Abdullahi Iand Odiba Haruna Inah were declared wanted on Tuesday, January 31 after they fled in the wake of the discovery of the illegal goods that were imported into the country but The Punch reports that the duo submitted themselves to the Federal Operations Unit, Ikeja, on Wednesday, February 1.

The two men who reportedly cleared the boxes of guns are undergoing interrogation according to a source.

The source said: “They have surrendered for arrest. They came today shortly after they were declared wanted. While one came in the morning, the other surrendered around 4pm. They have been taken into custody and are currently undergoing interrogation.”

The source added that the importer, clearing agent and escort who had earlier been arrested were providing useful information and will face appropriate action at the end of investigation.

Jerry Attah who is the spokesperson of the FOU in Ikeja confirmed the arrest of the two men and said the shipping company has also been invited.

In a press statement delivered by the Comptroller-General of NCS Hameed Ali at a briefing in Lagos on Monday, January 30, the outfit said the guns were intercepted on Sunday, January 22.

The statement read: “On Sunday 22nd January 2017, the Roving Team of the NCS Federal Operations Unit while on information patrol intercepted a Mack truck with registration number BDG 265 XG conveying a 1x40ft Container with Number: PONU/825914/3along Mile 2 Apapa road.

“The truck was immediately taken to the premises of FOU Zone A,Ikeja where Physical examination revealed49 boxes containing a total number of 661 pieces of pump action rifles concealed with steal doors and other merchandize goods.”
