Osibanjo's committee on SGF, NIA FAILS to submit report on deadline

– The ongoing probe into the activities of the SGF and the DG of the NIA has hit a roadblock

– The presidential committee in charge of the probe says it is yet to conclude the exercise

– The submission of the report was therefore shifted to Monday, May 8

The presidential committee investigating the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, and Director-General of the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ayodele Oke has failed to submit its report.

The committee which is looking into allegations of corruption had earlier been asked to submit its report on Wednesday, May 3, but it was yet to conclude the exercise.

The committee headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said it will instead turn in the report on Monday, May 8, an extension of the initial 14-day deadline it had been given.

Meanwhile, Chief Albert Horsfall, the pioneer Director-General of the NIA, has warned that ongoing investigation will have a negative effect on the agency.

Chief Horsfall is of the opinion that it has opened the agency to ridicule and that it would take years to win back the confidence of its external agents and other collaborators.

Since the committee started sitting two weeks ago, it has been grilling the SGF and also quizzed a couple of other Nigerians involved in the corruption saga.

According to Vanguard, in an

interview, Horsfall also said the decision of the EFCC to open up the agency’s safe house was wrong on the fact that whatever misgivings the anti-graft agency had should have been addressed within the confines of the administration.

He said: “This is the service that operates the intelligence of the country overseas, the country’s diplomatic intelligence service. When you invade it this way, you expose it to ridicule, the myth around it will be gone. When you invade it, you demoralise them.”

Earlier, ZENITHBLOG.com published a statement by Laolu Akande, Vice President Osinbajo’s Media and Publicity Assistant, which said:

“The three-man Presidential Investigative Committee set up by President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, under the chairmanship of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, to inquire into the Discovery of Foreign and Local Currencies by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission at Osbourne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos and the Allegations of Due Process Violations in the Award of Contracts under the Presidential Initiative on the North East is completing its assignment today and is scheduled to present its reports to the President on Monday, May 8, 2017.”
