Nigeria’s democracy turning into military rule – Northern leader Tsav warns, reveals why

– Abubakar Tsav believes that the claims that former Governor Gabriel Suswam is a security threat does not hold any substance

– As a security expert, he argues that Suswam should have been arraigned 24 hours after his arrest by the DSS

An elderstatesman and former commissioner of police in Lagos state, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, has warned that Nigeria is drifting into the much-hated military rule with the continued detention of ex-Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue state by the Department of Security Services (DSS).

ZENITHBLOG.com reports that the country went into civil rule in 1999 after many years of military government that saw the assassination of prominent figures.

Daily Trust quoted Tsav as saying in Makurdi, the capital of Benue state, that the action of the DSS was improper.

“It is not proper that Suswam continued to remain in detention by the DSS. He should have been charged to court within 24-hours to enable Nigerians know why he is being held.

“The EFCC keeping him in their

custody for nearly three months now reminds me of the old military days,” he said.

The report said Tsav, a current commissioner at the Public Compliant Commission in Benue, said the report sent by the state to the DSS suggesting that Suswam could be a security threat had no substance.

The Benue Concerned Citizens, a pressure group, has also urged the National Assembly and the international community to wade into Suswam’s continued detention.

The group said the former governor’s detention since February 25 by the Department of State Services in a facility in Abuja without trial or access to lawyers and family members was not the best way to treat a citizen.
