Nigerian Prisons Service makes strategic move, vaccinates 29,194 inmates against meningitis

– The service said the exercise was carried out in synergy with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA)

– service was also extended to NPS staff and their family members and those living within the prisons neighbourhood

The Nigerian Prisons Service on Thursday, May 4, said it has vaccinated 29,164 inmates against Cerebrospinal Meningitis in 19 state across Nigeria.

The service said the exercise was carried out in synergy with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).

The spokesperson for the NPS Francis Enobore said that exercise was also a proactive response to the recent outbreak of the disease in some Northern state in Nigeria.

Cerebrospinal Meningitis is an acute inflammation of the protective membranes which covers the brain and spinal cord – meninges.

The Nigerian Prisons Service said the exercise was carried out in synergy with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA)

The most common symptoms of the disease are fever, headache and neck stiffness.

class="align-left">ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that Enobore said the states which benefited from the programme include Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa and Kaduna. Others are Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara Nasarawa and Niger State. Also covered are Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara State.

He added that the service was also extended to NPS staff and their family members and those living within the prisons neighbourhood.

Enobore noted that this particular service is the first of exercise which is expected to cover all formations of the NPS across Nigeria including the Federal Capital territory.

He said some other management programmes have been put in place to protect inmates against communicable diseases that may arise due to congestion.

He added that although no prisoner has died from the recent disease outbreak which has killed over 800 Nigerian in different states, the effort by the NPHCDA must be commended.
