He said: “We have gone to many security agencies, when we call them, they will say situation is a very bad one but nothing will be done.

“The problem is not even the cultists but the people grooming them,” he

said.

Also Victor Udom who speaks for the victims of Midim Atan said various petitions written to inspector general of police, the attorney general of the federation, National Human Rights Commission among many others.

He said: “In all I have written eight petitions to the IGP on this matter, two to the AGF, one to the NHRC, a civil society organization, a special adviser to the president on public prosecution office and another one to the National Security Adviser.”

Udom said in the most recent attacks, the gang invaded the local village market “Urua Nsong Eto”.

He said they vandalized shops and sent various markers away.

“Several home have been broken into by the hoodlums, doors damaged, windows smashed. Some members of the community were also injured in the process.

The gang placed a curfew which boldly stated in the market square that no one should be seen in the market as from 6pm daily.

These recent series of the attacks by the gang was triggered by the arrest of one of its leader, Emmanuel Ben by officers from the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Squad, a development that was said to have brought out political heavyweights and traditional rulers in the state to demand his unconditional release,” Udom said.

He further added that Ben was later moved to SARS headquarters in Abuja and will be moved back to Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital to be tried on “a lighter charge”.

“Instead of the police to move in and arrest the gang who invaded the market, The calabar Zone 6 police command arrested six members of the community, including a village chief.

They were tortured and detained for six days without being told of any crime they committed. Their phones are still withheld by the police up on till now.

It has got to the extent that the members of the community are now even afraid to report the activities of the gang for fear of reprisal attacks.

A lot of people have fled the community because of this continues unchecked mayhem caused by the gang.

Several media within the state had reported the activities of this cult group which ranged from killing, stealing, brutalizing to victimization and intimidation of victims without being brought to book,” Udom noted.

He also called the federal government, the Nigerian police and all security agencies in the country to come to the aid of residents of Midim Atan community.
