Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state is to set up a panel to probe the cause of the sudden death of the former governor of the state, Senator Isiaka Adeleke.

ZENITHBLOG.com recalls that Senator Adeleke died in the early hours of Sunday April 23, amidst speculations amongst his supporters that he may have been poisoned.

The media aide to the governor, Semiu Okanlawon, in a statement on Sunday, April 30, said the state government wanted to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of the senator in order to put the record straight, the Punch reports.

According to the statement, the governor described Senator Adeleke as a man of peace, who he said defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the August 2014 governorship poll in the state because he could not stand violence.

“Senator Adeleke was a man of peace. He preached peace and lived it through his life. He left the Peoples Democratic Party because he could not stand violence. This was after he was beaten up by some leaders of the PDP during a meeting in a hotel in Osogbo,” Aregbesola said.

The governor said his administration had planned a befitting state burial for the late politician, lamenting that this was scuttled by some persons.

“It is a profound irony and most unfortunate therefore that a few disgruntled elements, purporting to protest his death, desecrated his funeral with

violence and attacks on innocent persons. They dishonoured him and did his memory a great disservice by keeping his friends, political associates and well-wishers away from his burial.

“The best we could do in the circumstance was to declare three days of mourning throughout the state and fly national, state and our party’s flags at half-mast in his honour,” the government said.

The government noted that the inquest into the Senator’s death was needed to put the record straight.

“The Osun State Government, using the instrumentality of the law, is setting up an inquest to unravel the circumstances of this unfortunate and sad incident in order to put the record straight on his death,” it said.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Police Command said on Thursday April 27 that the autopsy report on the late senator, Isiaka Adeleke, has not reached it.

ZENITHBLOG.com previously reported that the late lawmaker was taken to Lodoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital for a pathological examination before he was buried on Monday in Ede, his home town.

Senator Adeleke’s family had earlier on Wednesday April 26 told journalists that the autopsy report was not ready and that contrary to media reports should be discountenanced.

Sources knowledgeable about the autopsy had, however, told Premium Times an interim report was produced and that the senator may have died from an excessive dose of drug. A final report was however, yet to be produced, as some test results were being awaited.

The Osun state police public relations officer, Folasade Odoro, said on Thursday that she would not be able to speak authoritatively on the autopsy since the report had not reached the command.
