– President Muhammadu Buhari’s comments after the 2015 election did more harm than good
– This was the submission of erudite scholar and prominent Igbo leader, Professor Anya O. Anya
– Professor Anya said the comments opened old wounds
The pro-Chancellor and chairman of the governing council, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia state, Professor Anya O. Anya has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s comments after the 2015 general elections opened new wounds and fueled agitation across the country.
President Buhari had openly said his responsibility was to look after the 95 per cent of people who voted for him and not the five percent that voted against him after the elections.
The comments did not go down well with so many public affairs analysts who criticised the president’s comment then.
In an interview with the Daily Sun, Professor Anya said President Buhari undermined his own authority by making that statement at the time.

His words: “He was undermining the basis of his own authority as the president of Nigeria, because when you are president, you swear to do good to all manner of people.
“Those who voted for you and those who voted against you; those who abused you and those who praised you, they are all your citizens.
Professor Anya recalled how at end of the civil war, General Yakubu Gowon pronounced the 3Rs- Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Reconciliation, but added that nothing was done to follow up on the policy.
He however noted that the National Assembly quickly passed a bill for rebuilding the North-east after the height of the Boko Haram insurgency.
“The east suffered war and nothing has happened,” he added.
Meanwhile, a civil society group, Coalition for Sustainable Democracy, has issued a warning to federal government officials reportedly making clandestine moves to undermine President Buhari.
In a statement sent to ZENITHBLOG.com by its chairman, Mohammed Yakubu, the group said those planning to take government through the back door will be resisted.
They stated that they are keenly following developments in the polity and vowed to do everything within their powers to protect the current democratic system in the country.
