The Senate has denied claims that it is mocking the anti-graft war by the federal government, describing those who hold such opinion as “mischievous elements.”

The Senate said there are “more than enough proofs” to show that the lawmakers were working to strengthen the anti-corruption process and institutions for increasing the efficiency of the war.

The Senate and the Muhammadu Buhari administration has had a cat and mouse relationship since the assumption of Bukola Saraki as the Senate President in June 2015.

The statement acknowledged the successes recorded so far by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in the bid to eradicate corruption.

“Available facts point to the fact that the 8th Senate is really complementing the efforts of the executive arm in order to achieve better results.

“On Wednesday this week alone, two anti-corruption bills passed the second reading stage in the senate and were referred to relevant committees for further action. The bills are:1) the Proceeds of Crime Bill and 2.)Assets Forfeiture Bill. Both bills are private member bills sponsored by Senators. A third anti-corruption bill is already in the works.

“Also, on Wednesday, the senate passed a

motion in which it resolved that all statutory corporations should submit their budget estimates within two weeks and should refrain from spending money on capital projects.

“This is a strong move to block loopholes through which revenues due to government are being siphoned. That is sure one of the boldest moves to stop corruption in revenue generating agencies,” the statement said.

President Buhari’s relationship with the National Assembly has not really been smooth

Meanwhile, a recent media report indicates that some top politicians are under watch by security agencies following the recent alarm raised by the chief of army staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai.

Buratai had warned officers against dabbling into politics in a recent statement, adding that they should save Nigeria’s nascent democracy.

The alarm is believed to have followed an intelligence report that some politicians, who were uncomfortable with the health of President Muhammadu Buhari, were infiltrating the military.
