Nigerians misunderstand us legislators ― Dogara laments

– Dogara says Nigerians are ignorant of the value of lawmakers

– The Speaker however said that the misunderstanding will not stop legislators from carrying out their duties

– The Nigerian Senate had earlier denied being against President Buhari’s anti-corruption

Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker of the House of Representatives has lamented that Nigerian lawmakers are grossly misunderstood by citizens.

Dogara said this on Saturday, May 20 in Kabba, Kogi State during the inauguration of projects and presentation of empowerment materials by Tajudeen Yusuf, the member representing Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu federal constituency.

Nigerian Tribune reports that Dogara expressed worries that after 18 years of democracy, many Nigerians still misunderstood the legislative arm of government.

Dogara says even though lawmakers are misunderstood, they will continue to their duties

The number four man in Nigeria’s hierarchy of citizenship said the National Assembly remains committed to doing its best to improve the well-being of Nigerians.

Dogara said: “This glaring misunderstanding have in many ways put the Legislature under tremendous pressure and challenge. Constituents inundate legislators with request and demand of various issues that are clearly outside the functions of the Parliament.

“Despite the misinterpretation of the roles of legislature by Nigerians and realising the preponderance of economic and infrastructural deficit across the country, the 8th Assembly of the National Assembly resolved to intervene where and

when necessary.”

On his part, Yusuf said the event to show his commitment to his constituency’s development.

He said: “For me, my passion is non-negotiable. I am not apologetic about it. At all times, I strive to explore opportunities and openings that will impact positively on my people.”

“Inspire of the dwindling economic fortunes of Nigeria and its attendant challenges on the citizenry, I have resolved to still fulfil my pledge to the good people of Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency.

ZENITHBLOG.com gathered that Dogara’s words come just as the Nigerian Senate explained that the upper house of legislature is not against President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war as perceived by Nigerians.

The Senate denied claims that it is mocking the anti-graft war by the federal government, describing those who hold such opinion as “mischievous elements.”

The Senate said there are “more than enough proofs” to show that the lawmakers were working to strengthen the anti-corruption process and institutions for increasing the efficiency of the war.
