Read the reaction of Ijaw people towards the re-opening of Nigeria Maritime University in Delta state

– Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has expressed satisfaction with President Buhari’s decision to re-open the Nigeria Maritime University in Delta state

– The youth council said it was a welcome development and an opportunity to make education accessible to the people of the area

– IYC said the groundwork has been done by the previous administration, hence resumption would not be a herculean task

The people of Ijaw ethnic nationality have expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari over the marching order given to the committee involved in the Nigeria Maritime University to begin academic session in the 2017/2018 academic year.

On Friday, May 5, President Muhammadu Buhari directed the opening of the university through the federal ministry of education with a five man implementation committee involving the minister of education, Mallam Adamu Adamu and Deputy Governor of Delta state, Kingsley Otuaro.

In a telephone conversation with ZENITHBLOG.com, President of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Eric Omare, said the re-opening of the university was a welcome development, saying it will give opportunity to the riverine people to attend university without much stress.

Though Omare said the cancellation and the ensuing battle were unnecessary, he said it was a welcome development for the federal government to have seen the need to right the wrong.

“It is good they have realized their mistake and they have decided to do the needful. It is heartwarming and we commend the

president for that.

“We commend him for accepting the error and now decided to correct it. We also demand that beyond rhetoric, we want action.

“Let the academic work start in earnest so that our people will go to university with ease. By the statement of the president, the university is to resume by the end of 2017,” Omare said.

When asked on staff for the commencement of classes, Omare said: “When they want to do begin, they may not need the full complement of staff. They can start with few.”

However, he said the foundational staff have already been employed during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said the Vice Chancellor, the bursar, the registrar are already on ground, adding that there is also a governing council which had been put in place by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He added: “The system has gone to advanced stage. The academic activity was supposed to commence in 2015 before the unfortunate issue came up.

“The VC, Registrar and Bursar were all appointed during the regime of former President Goodluck Jonathan. They all on ground and they have ben part and parcel of the battle.”
