Niger state demands deployment of more policemen after incessant attacks

– Niger state government has called on the Inspector General Police of Alhaji Ibrahim Idris to help curb attacks in the state

– Jonathan Vatsa, the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism for the state confirmed that 27 persons were killed and scores wounded in a recent attack

– Vatsa says the recent attack the place would have been prevented by the marine police if they were present

Niger state government has called on the Inspector General Police Alhaji Ibrahim Idris to deploy marine police divisions to the communities at the riverbanks in the state.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the call was made in a statement signed by Jonathan Vatsa, the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism.

The statement was released on Friday, May 18, and made available to media in Minna.

Vatsa said the measure would prevent further attacks on affected communities in Mokwa, Muye, Kacha and Agaie local government areas.

The commissioner for information said: ‘’The attacks have been massive and are likely to get worse with the Baro Port coming up.

‘’The presence of marine policemen would check the movement of the attackers because they use ferry boats

.“The marine police specialise in tackling crime along the creeks and waterways; crimes are being committed along

the waterways in Niger, so we need such professionals to help us,”

Vatsa confirmed that 27 persons were killed and scores wounded in the recent attack on Etogi Community in Gbara area of Mokw.

‘’That attack on Etogi would have been prevented by the marine police.

”We are optimistic that a well coordinated approach to securing the nation’s maritime domain, especially the waterways in Niger, will secure lives,” he said.

ZENITHBLOG.com earlier reported that in a similar vein, a member of the Kogi state House of Assembly recently pleaded with the federal government to massively deploy security agents to his constituency to protect the people against attacks by Fulani herdsmen.

Hassan Atayoma Omale representing Ankpa/Omala/Olamaboro federal constituency of Kogi state, said troops of the Nigerian Army and mobile policemen are needed in Bagana, a community in Omala local government of Kogi state.
