In July 2016, for the first time in the history of Nigeria, a woman was made Managing Director of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA).
President Muhammadu Buhari appointed 41-year-old Hadiza Bala Usman, who was formerly the chief of staff to the Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
Let us meet Hadiza Bala Usman:
1. Education
A Master’s degree holder in Development Studies from the University of Leeds, 2009, Hadiza has a background and enough experience in policy research and public sector reforms.

Before that she earned her bachelor’s degree in 2000 from Ahmadu Bello University.

2. BBOG campaign
When Boko Haram kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls in 2014, Bala Usman began to protest, leading groups around Nigeria and in the kidnapped girls’ hometown of Chibok.
Bala Usman started the campaign, #BringBackOurGirls (BBOG), chose the color red for it and has encouraged women “to keep the issue in the public eye.”
She also helped coordinate meetings with the parents of the kidnapped girls and members of the Nigerian government. Bala Usman has continued to protest with the BBOG campaign into 2016. She was also featured in Financial Times, and at CNN for her work with BBOG.

3. Family
Bala Usman was born in Zaria to the historian, Yusufu Bala Usman. She is married to an economic analyst Tanimu Yakubu Kurfi who served under the late Umaru Musa Yar’adua as economic adviser and together they have two boys.
On Wednesday, March 22, 2017, ZENITHBLOG.com reported that the managing director raised an alarm over threats to her life.
In a series of tweets posted on her Twitter handle on that Wednesday, Usman claimed she has been issued with death threats and veiled messages conveying that her life is at risk.
