Flooding, 6 other things that will happen to Lagos in 20 years – Nigerians speak

Today, Lagos is the land of opportunity, one of the most populated cities in Nigeria and home to millions of people from all over the world.

Where do you see Lagos in 20 years? This question was asked on Quora and this is what Nigerians have to say about the future of the mega city:

1. Population

Vahyala Kwaga, who lives in Lagos says: “Much more densely populated, to be sure. Apart from Abuja (Nigeria’s capital city) Lagos has the highest influx of people.

This probably has a lot to do with the fact that it is Nigeria’s commercial nerve center, as well.”

2. Infrastructure

Kwaga also says: “In addition, there would likely be some massive infrastructural changes (bridges, luxury housing and transportation) to handle the population growth and the expansion of business. For the latter, take note of the Eko Atlantic City that is set to rival anything West Africa has ever seen.”

3. Crime

The Ahmadu Bello University graduate said about crime: “Then again, crime rates, police brutality and other human misery would surely increase due to the gulf that inequality is slowly but surely creating.”

4. The ocean

He said in conclusion: “In addition the Atlantic ocean is eating away at the shoreline and 20 years is not a long time for Poseidon to ‘reclaim’ his territory.”

5. Comparisons

Afam Orji had this to say: “The target of the Lagos government is to make Lagos look like the likes of New York and London. Whether that is possible remains to be seen.

“But with the way things are going, Lagos is definitely going to better in 20 years in a lot of ways especially infrastructure wise.”

6. Poverty level

Orji concluded by saying: “The only thing that will suffer is it’s inhabitants because the poverty level will rise since the government isn’t doing much to empower ‘Lagosians’ so that they can build a city of their dream.”

“The government it self is trying hard to make sure Lagos lives to its standard as the Largest commercial hub in Nigeria. I see Lagos in the next 20 years as silicon Valley of Nigeria and in Africa.”
