Jeffery Abiama is a hair stylist in Otuoke, country home of former President Goodluck Jonathan. ZENITHBLOG.com was in the community to view developments in the area and our correspondent ran into this young man making hair for women.
He appeared nice and was working greatly on the hair of a student of the Federal University, Otuoke, Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa state. Jeff as he is fondly called told our correspondent that he has great interest in making women look good and attractive.
He said the first time he saw men making women’s hair he felt it was like magic. “So, I said I will do it too. I’m interested in it. After that I went to Lagos to learn it for two months and half. Others learn it for six months, eight months and some even one year. But I learnt my own for two months and half.”
According to him, he learnt making women’s hair in Maza Maza Lagos in 2010 and from then till now, he has made a living from it. “My boss then was a very young guy like me. The guy does it very well too.”
When asked whether he is enjoying dressing hair for women being a man, he said: “I’m enjoying it very well. I get customers more than ladies who do this job.

“I also make more money than ladies who also do this work like me. I learnt it, I didn’t jump into it. So I do better than them.
“We know how to calculate the hair before we fix them. You can’t just fix hair without calculating it. It won’t be fine.”
However, he said if another job comes his way, he would go for it but it must be the job that must fetch him more money than his hair making business. But for now, he said he is okay with the hair making business.
He revealed that he actually wanted to learn how to make glasses but his father who lives in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital, was not interested in it. But to please himself and learn the one that would favour him, he escaped to Lagos in 2010, abandoning his father. He said his father was not aware of his disappearance to Lagos.
“I actually wanted to learn how to make glasses but then my dad was not interested in it. I know if I had told him I wanted to learn this work, he won’t be happy, so I left him and went to Lagos to learn it.
“My dad was not aware when I left for Lagos in 2010. Now he is proud of me. My dad is in Yenagoa. My mum is Otuoke here but I live on my own,” Jeff said.

He also revealed that at the beginning of the business in Otuoke, there was the challenge of customers due to the small nature of the village but at the establishment of the federal university by former President Goodluck Jonathan, the business began to boom.
But there is one challenge, the problem of electricity in the area is inhibiting his business. He said: “We need light to do our work but in Otuoke here, there is no light so we buy a lot of fuel. It affects our work and it’s consuming much of our money.”
The lady, whose hair he was dressing as at the time ZENITHBLOG.com visited him, showered encomium on Jeff. For Joyce Edobo, a final student of Federal University Otuoke, Jeff is the right person to do her hair.
Edobo, who is studying English and Communication Arts, said: “I see no problem that a man is doing my hair, I see it as normal. It’s not like I prefer a man but since I’m in Otuoke here, Jeff is like one of the best person I see that can fix my hair.”
