Education
After St. Michael’s Primary School graduating, he attended Sacred Heart Catholic Seminary. There he refused to become a priest and swore a vow of chastity.
He continued his study in the University of Ife, where he was studying law in 1977-1981.
Sometime after graduation, he became a member of the bar.
Career and activism
In 1991 Femi Falana organized his own Chambers and called it Femi Falana, later the name was changed to Falana and Falana Chambers, his wife Funmi became his partner.
In 2012 as result of brilliant career, Femi Falana became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
Femi Falana is famous also as a human rights activist. He cannot observe other people suffering, therefore he has “married Law”. He had high interest in Constitutional criticism, so he had experienced fighting masses, arrests, and state prosecutions. It is obvious that his path to success was not a bed of roses. Falana has been always fighting for the rights and freedom of others. Femi Falana is one of the most well paid lawyers in Nigeria, but it is a usual practice for him to provide free legal services for poor and dispossessed. He was in detention numerous times for his activism, but Falana is Falana, and he overcame these hard times and won for his activism many local and international awards. No you understand, who is Femi Falana.
Femi Falana and Falz
Femi Falana and his wife Funmi are very proud now with their son’s achievements as a singer and actor. Recently, they even have organized a get-together party to celebrate with relatives and friends accomplishments of their no less famous son, who has chosen another of his parents’ path. At the beginning Falz’s mother Funmi was against his choise, but Mr. Falana became a good backing for his son, he supported him in all Folarin’s beginnings.

During the party, organized for Falz Funmi said:
“I am the disciplinarian in the house,” …“He (Falz) had started his career when he was in law school. I would tell him ‘you must practice law. I insist that you practice law. I sent you to England to study law. You cannot waste my money’. But his father would go behind me to encourage him. I told the father ‘Iwo lo nba awon omo yi je’ (you are the one spoiling these children).”
Femi Falana is a liberal, that was the reason, as he says, why he refused to influence son’s decision. Femi Falana said about this:
“I want to corroborate what my wife said that I stubbornly conspired with Folarin to pursue music. We had a lot of quarrels in bringing up the kids. My wife believes that you spare the rod and spoil the child, which is good for the home. I am almost the opposite, not spare the rod, but also encourage the child. Sometimes, I accused her of child abuse because of her harassment of the kids.”
“To be honest, we didn’t influence Folarin to read law. I took him to school one day. I think he was in primary five. He was late to class and everybody said ‘the Law’. I asked him later whether he wanted to read law and he said ‘yes’. He went to the law school, and he did well. We thought he was going to come out as a very good lawyer. He just came to meet me one day and said, ‘Dad, I think I want to move on. I can’t be going to court for adjournments all the time’.”
“The mum came to challenge me that I was spoiling him. Apart from my own liberal disposition, I think I was largely influenced by my experience with Fela who was our client for about 15 years. Fela’s mother believed that he was going to be a colossal failure. How can anybody in 1967, in this part of the world, say he wanted to be a musician? Fela’s elder brother had become a doctor, and the younger brother was going to read law. But later, the mother became Fela’s mother and the brothers became Fela’s brothers.”
With huge excitement, Falana was talking about the situation in the airport, that had happened with him once.
“I was at Abuja airport, some young people came to me and asked, ‘sir, are you Falz’ father?’ and I said, ‘I think so’. They said ‘we know you are’. I replied, ‘if you know, that is alright’”
Both Falanas, father and son, are famous, but each of them has chosen his own way.
