There is no doubt that economic recession is biting harder in Nigeria on a daily basis. As you are reading this, I am sure you are nodding your head thinking about how prices of food items have increased and how everything seems to be getting worse in the current economy.

Have you opened any newspapers and seen headlines like “X and Y company downsizes 200 staff”, etc.? How did that make you feel?

If you’re like most people, you would feel bad for those affected. It is no mean feat to head to your work place and be handed a pink slip and told your services are no longer required. Even after all your hard work! When I read stories about downsizing? I really feel sorry for the affected people. Some of those have families; they have bills to pay, rent, and school fees.

If you are married and have kids, I am sure that you would know that paying school fees these days is not easy at all. In fact, even if you are still fortunate to have a job, the fact is that our forex situation has affected a lot of companies and industries and there’s no certainty that your job might be around the following month or year.

When I was working full time, I remember the occupy Nigeria protests when the price of fuel went up. The funny thing was even though the price of fuel went up, my salary remained the same. So, what’s the best way out of all this? I will tell you, and you need to read this very carefully.

You must find a legitimate business to start on the side, which will serve as protection against the economic lions out there that are ready to gobble up your salary faster than a starving prophet after 40 days fasting. Now that begs the question, what sorts of businesses can you start?

You can start a small business or self-employed type of business. This involves selling a product or service or learning a skill like making shoes, sewing clothes, and selling it to customers. In this kind of business, you are the CEO, the marketing manager and the bookkeeper.

The disadvantage of this kind of business model is that the business is tied to you. So the minute you do not show up or fall sick, your profits will fail.

A good business ensures that profits keep coming in, even if you are not present. Now, most traditional businesses take a whole lot of money to start up and then you need to worry about all those pesky things like employee payroll, overhead, etc.

You could go into franchising, like Coldstone, Mr Biggs, etc., but those cost millions of naira, which you probably might not have except if you are from a wealthy family and even then you will probably not break even immediately.

So what’s next? You can start a Direct Selling Business or Network Marketing Business. A network marketing business is a mini franchise business where you partner with an existing company and leverage on their products and efforts to build your own fortune. You pay a small amount of money (anything between =N= 25,000 to =N=100,000), and you can purchase a distributor starter kit.

You can now leverage on the companies resources and build a global network of customers and distributors like yourself, right from your home using your laptop and phone and get paid residual income.

Note that you should be careful and only partner with reputable companies, which have a genuine physical product that can be sold in the market place. Any so called MLM without any product is most likely a pyramid/ponzi scheme.

Take note and be warned!

Here are 5 reasons you must start a network marketing (MLM) business in Nigeria:

1. Low startup costs

As compared with starting a traditional business or franchise, low startup will cost millions to set up.

2. Quality business education and training

Most Network Marketing companies want you to succeed, and will give you the best training on mindset, selling skills, leadership and entrepreneurship.

Apart from this, you also get “real world” training in how to overcome rejection, face your fears, and have a compelling vision.

3. Time freedom

When I used to be in the corporate “rat race”, I was doing 4 hours a day in Traffic, and I had no time for myself whatsoever.

Network Marketing allows you time freedom, because if you build it right, you begin to earn residual income based on sales that happen within your organization.

You can work from home, and choose your work hours, and have time to spend with those close to you.

4. Financial freedom

When you begin to make money from your Network Marketing business, you start to enjoy financial freedom, meaning you can make some major decisions and take some business risks without worrying about finances

5. No worrying about inventory/payroll overhead

Your job is to use the products, sell or retail the products, and build a team of loyal product users, and distributors like yourself.

How the product comes into Nigeria and gets cleared at the port is not your problem. You do not have to think of warehousing, employees, etc.

Network Marketing, like any other business requires a lot of hard work, personal development and dedication. My advice is to find a good company, attend their seminars, ask questions, and then get to work, and with this, you would have started on a sure path to financial freedom.
