Step-by-step process of extracting coconut oil:

  • First you’ll need to lay out the coconuts you’ll need.
  • Then you need to break open the coconuts, taking care not to wound yourself with the rough shell.
  • Grab a knife with which you’ll go ahead to separate the white flesh of the coconut from its shell.
  • Mash the coconuts by blending it to a pulp. Water should be added to ensure that the coconut is finely ground.
  • Ensure that your hands are clean before you start squeezing the blended coconuts in a bowl. Maintain this process for about 30 minutes to an hour, it helps to make sure the oil comes out right. After the stipulated time, you’ll notice the oil start to float to the surface.
  • The next step is to separate the coconut mixture and to do this, you’ll have to tie a neat piece of cloth (preferably a cheesecloth) over a neat empty bowl, where you’ll then pour the mix onto. Then untie the cloth from the bowl, tie it up and squeeze till there’s no moisture left, only chaff.
  • The mixture you have in the bowl should then be covered and left for 24 hours, to allow a complete separation. What you’ll be left with is a thick top layer (a creamy liquid), an oily second layer (the coconut oil) and a third layer (plain water).
  • Scoop out the top layer, then store the oil in a container for use.
