Exotic oils available in Nigeria

Nigerians are beginning to understand the importance of using nature to sustain health and the use of natural resources are gradually becoming a thing.

Instead of using the harmful additives and chemicals we normally use, Nigerians are now learning to use natural remedies such as exotic oils are extracted from plants.

What are exotic oils?

Exotic oils or Essential oils are simply known as oils of plants. They are called essential oils because they contain the essence of the plants that they are derived from. Exotic oils are concentrated extracts of seeds, bark, stems, roots and flowers of plants.

They are said to be liquid aroma compounds from natural sources prepared by fragrance extraction techniques such as distillation and cold pressing.

Here are some essential or exotic oils that can be found in Nigeria

1. Moringa oil: It comes from seeds of the Moringa Oleifera Tree. It is famous for the benefits it offers such as anti-aging benefit, acne and dark spots cleanser, scalp moisturizer and it can also be used to cures insomnia.

2. Carrot seed oil: carrot seed oil is an essential oil extracted from the seed of a carrot plant known as Daucus Carota. It is commonly used for the fragrance benefit.

3. Ginger oil: ginger oil is an essential oil extracted from a ginger root also known as the Zingiber Officinale. It is commonly used as a treatment for food poisoning, mosquito repellant. Ginger oil can also be used to treat cough, relive pain and help reduce risk of blood clots in the body.

4. Grapefruit oil: It is an essential oil extracted from the rind of a grapefruits. It can be used as a cleansing and purifying property, it is also frequently used for skincare.

5. Henna oil: Henna oil is extracted from the leaves of Lawsonia Inermis plant also known as the henna tree. It is good for maintaining hair health, prevents dandruff and lowers fatigue. Henna oil treats fungal infection, scabies and burns. The henna leaf can also be used as a dye.

6. Lemon oil: It is extracted from the rind of a lemon fruit. It can be used to enhance weight loss, relief nausea, nourish the skin, improve digestion and used as a cough relief.

7. Coconut oil: coconut oil is an essential oil extracted from kernel of mature coconuts. It is commonly used for cooking but it can also be used to moisturize the skin, it decreases wrinkles, it balances blood sugar and improves digestion. The coconut tree is considered as the “tree of life” because of its many uses.

8. Orange oil: It is extracted from the rind of orange and can be used as biological pest control. It kills ants and it can also be used to control drywood termites.

9. Thyme oil: It is derived from thyme also known as Tymus Vulgaris. The essential oil extract from thyme has a lot of medicinal benefits such as oral mouthwash, insecticide, hair health and it can also be used to prevent acne and skin breakage.

10. Tangerine oil: It is extracted from the rind of a tangerine fruit. The benefits of tangerine oil can be attributed to its properties as an antiseptic, sedative, and also as a blood purifier. It improves body organs.

Why do we need exotic oils?

Nigerians have always believed that herbs and plants are better for the human body than chemical substances but overtime we have become accustomed to the chemicals provided to us through evolution and technology.

We need these exotic oils not only because they help soothe our body and mind but also because the cleaning products, beauty products and even some of the fast food we eat are full of chemicals that are harmful to us.
